David Wright got engaged last winter to his longtime girlfriend, model Molly Beers. By then he was already married to the New York Mets - for better or for worse. In their most reassuring move of a pivotal offseason, the struggling Mets committed to building around their All-Star third baseman by signing Wright to an eight-year contract worth $138 million, the richest deal in team history. Now, he's banking on their pledge to surround him with a playoff team. Sooner rather than later. ''I've been here long enough to experience a little bit of good, some bad and some ugly, but I am 100 percent confident and just crazy excited about the direction we are going with some of the young players we have,'' Wright said. ''It's going to be sweet to watch these younger players develop and see the direction we're heading. It's going to be something special.'' Wright always knows the right things to say, a big reason he recently was anoin...

Mets Card of the Week: 2007 David Wright

2007 BOWMAN’S BEST DAVID WRIGHT O Captain, my Captain… OK, OK, I’ll get off the top of my desk for a minute to talk about our Mr. Wright. The New York sports media do not occur naturally where I live, nor do I seek them out actively on my own. So while I imagine that David Wright being named captain of the Mets got back-page/top-of-fold play up north, down here in Virginia...

Mets Shouldn’t Push Wright For Opening Day Start

With most strained and pulled muscles, a sound approach is whatever timetable is given just add a week. Given that, I don’t see why the Mets seem to be rushing David Wright, who sustained a strained left intercostal muscle while at the WBC. I also don’t see why Wright is rushing himself. WRIGHT: Needs to slow down. Didn’t anybody learn anything from the Johan Santana fiasco...

Encouraging News For Wright; Opening Day A Possibility

After he played in a minor league game today, the Mets softened their position on whether David Wright could be ready for Opening Day. When Wright was pulled from the World Baseball Classic last week, manager Terry Collins was thinking a month. Not any longer. “I would not be surprised if David Wright is there Opening Day,’’ Collins told reporters today. “There will be a...

Some Encouraging News For Wright; Opening Day Now A Possibility

After he played in a minor league game today, the Mets softened their position on whether David Wright could be ready for Opening Day. When Wright was pulled from the World Baseball Classic last week, manager Terry Collins was thinking a month. Not any longer. “I would not be surprised if David Wright is there Opening Day,’’ Collins told reporters today. “There will be a...

David Wright, Daniel Murphy And The Year Of The Intercostal Injury

This spring has been rocked by injuries for the Mets thus far. Maybe it’s because we live in New York, and hear about the injuries more, but it doesn’t seem like as many teams have suffered the amount of injuries that the two New York teams have this spring. While injuries are sometimes unpreventable and part of the game, the injuries this spring that really made me scratch...

Opening Day Prospects Improve For Wright And Murphy

After repeatedly expressing doubt recently David Wright and Daniel Murphy will in the Opening Day lineup, the Mets changed course today and indicated otherwise. Murphy, speaking on WFAN, said he expects to play. Manager Terry Collins said Murphy could play in a major league exhibition game tomorrow, which represents a huge mistake if he were injured and had to go on the disabled...

Mets Notes: Murphy and Wright Could Start Opening Day, Turner Still Getting Treatment

Daniel Murphy passed the audition and said it was worth the risk. Murphy, playing for the first time in a major league game this spring because of a strained right intercostal muscle, singled in three at-bats against Washington’s Gio Gonzalez, played five innings and declared himself ready for Opening Day. Had he kept playing minor league games until Monday and was re-injured...

Quotes from Santana’s teammates on his injury

The Mets stated Thursday that Santana had torn his left shoulder capsule for the second time in three years, creating a strong possibility that he would need surgery. His days as a Mets pitcher look to be over, and even his career is in question at this point. Here are some quotes from the Mets team: “You do something for so long and you’re so successful at it, and to have...

Mets Have More Questions Than Days Left Before Opening Day

With four days until Opening Day, most teams have their rosters, rotation and batting order set. The Mets are not most teams. Their three remaining exhibition games will do little to answer questions for manager Terry Collins, who undoubtedly won’t be satisfied with what he sees Monday and will be mixing and matching for weeks. The Mets think David Wright and Daniel Murphy will...

Days Dwindling For Mets; Questions Aren’t

The Mets have two games remaining in spring training, and if they don’t know what they have by now they never will. They break camp today after playing St. Louis, then bus over to the bay side of the state to play the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday. Next will be Opening Day Monday afternoon against San Diego, while at the same time, in a display of scheduling genius by Major League...

New York Mets 2013 Season Preview

I’m not all that excited about writing the Mets preview this year. I’ve had the same feeling for a few years now when I write the Mets preview. They’re still part of the fraternal order of Major League Baseball. Due to that, I’ll settle in and do my best to give them their share of the spotlight. It’s just that the Mets might be without David Wright to open the season due...

From Left Field: Keith Hernandez’s Lineup Idea Looks Good

In the television broadcasts this spring in which Keith Hernandez has been in the booth, he’s provided his insights into the best potential Mets’ batting order. He said that the best lineup will have length, and I agree. The team isn’t exactly an offensive powerhouse, so it will have to create ways to get the maximum production. The potential lineup would be the following:...

Who Bats Where For The Mets?

One of the more interesting debates that comes up around this time as Spring Training is coming to an end is what will the lineups look like for the upcoming season. Now of course we don’t know about injuries, call ups, along with unexpected struggles and successes that happen each and every season. The other thing that happens is that “Spring Training Superstars” get places...
