First Pitch: Why I Don’t Think the Pirates Are Done After Marte Promotion

After it was announced that Starling Marte would be promoted tomorrow, I started getting the following question on Twitter: Do you think the Pirates will make any more moves now that Starling Marte is up? My answer: yes. My reasoning: look at the pitching. The pitching staff has been strong this year. Not only has it been strong, but it has depth. Jeff Locke, Justin Wilson, and previously...

Starling Marte hits HR on first MLB pitch

Starling Marte – One Pitch and Gone!(Photo: deadspin.com) Welcome to the Majors, Starling Marte! The Pittsburgh Pirates organization and its fans have been anxiously awaiting the Major League arrival of their prospect who hails from the Dominican Republic. Starling Marte wasted little time in showing his talents. While making his debut against the Houston Astros, Marte led off...

Memorable start for Marte

There was a good significant amount of buzz among Pirates fans coming into tonight’s game because of Starling Marte‘s major league debut, and I’m sure everyone’s eyes were on the rookie as he stepped in to the box for his first MLB at bat at 8:05. He didn’t disappoint. Instead of watching the first pitch like most leadoff hitters (and certainly most hitters making their...

Pirates Notebook: Marte Impressive in Debut; Jones Hitting Lefties

Starling Marte was impressive in his Major League debut. Manager Clint Hurdle always gives the same message to rookies when they first arrive to the big leagues — respect everything and fear nothing. The message must have resonated with the 23-year-old Startling Marte in his Major League debut on Thursday in Houston. Because that’s exactly what he did. The outfielder stepped...

Here Comes The Marte

Well the word is out, Starling Marte will meet the Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Club in Houston.  A promotion!  He is free. Soooooooooo Thanks Chris. Anyway. It was bound to happen. I still think it is the wrong move to make. Marte has been good, not great at Triple A. The reasons why for and against [...]

Game 98: Pirates 5 Astros 3

On the bus home tonight, a thought popped into my head. It flitted in and out pretty quickly, but it was definitely there. "What if Starling Marte homers in his first at-bat?"I didn't really have an answer, and I pushed the thought out pretty quickly. I always ask that when a player makes a debut, because it's such a cool thing to have a player homer in his first...

Pirates Trade For Wandy Rodriguez

As you’ve probably heard the Pittsburgh Pirates have traded for LHP Wandy Rodriguez from the Houston Astros.  The Pirates sent the Astros LHP Rudy Owens, LHP Colton Cain, and OF Robbie Grossman.  They will also receive $12 million dollars in cash, depending on if Wandy exercises his 2014 player option. Personally, I like the trade. [...]

Pirates trade for Wandy Rodriguez

The Pirates added left handed starter Wandy Rodriguez from the Astros from three minor league pitchers. Rodriguez, an eight year veteran with a career 80-84 record, gives the Pirates much needed depth as they attempt to post their first winning season in 19 years. Pittsburgh is two and a half games behind the Reds in the NL central, but own a stellar 54-42 record. The addition of...

Matt Harvey Gets Nasty in Major League Debut, Strikes Out 11 in Mets Win

Starling Marte wasn't the only player to have a highly successful major league debut Thursday night. While Marte made history by homering on the first pitch he saw of his big league career, it was Mets prospect Matt Harvey who may have had the best debut on Thursday. Harvey was utterly filthy in his first major league start against the Diamondbacks in Phoenix. He went 5 1/3 scoreless...

Former Astros left-hander Wandy Rodriguez will meet his new Pirates teammates and prized prospect Starling Marte is expected to make his major league debut Thursday night in...

Pirates upgrade rotation with Wandy Rodriguez

For much of the summer, almost all the talk surrounding hypothetical Pirates trades has centered around a bat. The Pirates managed to stick around  for two months despite a historically terrible offense because their pitching staff did a wonderful job. In the summer months, the offense has picked up the slack and the Bucs caught fire. As that’s happened, the rotation took a step...

Astros GM defends deadline deals

The Miami Marlins aren't the only team alarming the industry with their shift in direction. The Houston Astros, who are awful now, will be even worse next season, their first in the powerful AL West. They're trading veterans, including cash in deals and still getting mediocre prospects in return. "They're going way overboard," one rival executive said Wednesday...

The Bleakness That Is The Houston Astros’ Franchise

2012 is important for the Astros to sift through all the recently-added players from 2011′s trades and callups from the minors.  The 2012 season will be a pretty bleak season for fans at Minute Maid Park.  – 2012 Houston Astros Forecast from the 2012 Pirates Prospects Annual. When I wrote those words in December 2011, I knew things were going to be ugly for the Astros in 2012...
