Many who followed the 1962 New York Mets remember Marv Throneberry, the first baseman who was anything but surehanded. Though Throneberry did not start the season with the Mets, he did get the bulk of playing time at 1B. On the day which would have marked his 79th birthday, (he passed away in 1994) lets go over his 1962 season and how it related to the rest of his playing career. ——————————————————————————– Throneberry was drafted as an amateur free agent by the Yankees in 1952. He made brief appearances with the Yankees in 1955, 1958 and 1959, including an appearance in the 1958 World Series. He was traded to the Kansas City Athletics with Hank Bauer and Don Larsen in the trade that brought Roger Maris to the Yankees. Throneberry spent a year and a half in Kansas City before he was traded to Baltimore in 1961. He then started the 1962 season in Baltimore before being traded to the Mets on May 9, 1962.
