While watching the World Series on the big screen, Mike Matheny can't help but project, wondering how it all went wrong. Three days after the St. Louis Cardinals squandered a 3-1 lead in the NL championship series and punished themselves with a red-eye flight home, their rookie manager said he hadn't slept much. He also hadn't had much time to dissect exactly how it all went sour so fast. The team failed on many levels in dropping the last three games to the Giants by a combined score of 20-1. Matheny said it was somewhat reassuring to see San Francisco's Barry Zito master the Detroit Tigers in Game 1, just as the left-hander carved up the Cardinals in Game 5 of the NLCS. In a year filled with booms and busts, Matheny and general manager John Mozeliak are still puzzled by the final collapse.

Matheny reflects on postseason run

ST. LOUIS Barely two days after being eliminated with a Game 7 loss to the San Francisco Giants, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny couldnt help but turn on the TV Wednesday night to watch Game 1 of the World Series. And when he saw Giants lefty Barry Zito fool the Tigers like he did his powerful offense a few days earlier, he couldnt help but feel a little bit better about what had...

The St. Louis Cardinals won't renew the contract of bullpen coach Dyar Miller, the team announced Thursday. The rest of manager Mike Matheny's coaching staff will be offered an opportunity to stay, general manager John Mozeliak said. That includes Mark McGwire, Derek Lilliquist and Jose Oquendo. St. Louis Cardinals fans exploit son’s devastation for YouTube notoriety (video)

It’s been awhile since we have highlighted the troubling trend that has developed of sports fans exploiting the tears of their child following a heartbreaking loss by a favorite sports team by uploading a video to the internet that captures the poor kid’s devastation. Long Cardinals post-season run-scoring droughts

As St. Louis Cardinals fans know all too well, the club’s offense almost completely dried up in Games 5 through 7 of the National League Championship Series. Including the final inning of their Game 4 win, the Cardinals scored just one tally over their final 28 innings of play in 2012. By one inning, that drought broke the unenviable team record for the most consecutive post-season...

After stunning NLCS exit, Cards try to regroup

ST. LOUIS (AP) Kyle Lohse got to bed at 5:30 a.m. after the St. Louis Cardinals' flight following a most unpleasant end to the NL championship series against the San Francisco Giants. Fatigue only added to the aftershock of a spectacular nosedive as players cleaned out their lockers Tuesday at an empty stadium still adorned with bunting. The pitcher's mound and home plate...

Will Jose Oquendo get a shot at the Miami Marlins job?

St. Louis Cardinals fans adore the "Secret Weapon."  After a solid playing career in a Cardinals uniform, Jose Oquendo has been on the St. Louis Cardinals coaching staff since 1997.  Most of that time, Oquendo served as the Cardinals third base coach and as an understudy to future Hall of Fame and former Cardinals manager Tony La Russa. Oquendo has put in his time,...

ST. LOUIS Baseball's higher forces have a wicked sense of humor. How else to explain shortstop Pete Kozma, the St. Louis Cardinals' King Clutch this October, becoming the victim of a funhouse sequence in Game 7 of the National League Championship Series? Let's rewind to Monday night: In the bottom of the third inning, the San Francisco Giants led 2-0. Bases were loaded...
