Back in April, it was reported that plans were in the works for the team to sign Hideki Matsui to a one-day contract so he can retire as a Bronx Bomber. On July 28th, Hideki Matsui bobblehead day, the organization and their fans will honor the Yankee icon with a ceremony prior to their game with the Rays. The festivities are set to take place on the same day as the team’s originally scheduled 55th regular season home game – the same number Matsui wore on his back. Matsui will ink a one-day minor league deal that day. Signed prior to the 2003 season, Matsui quickly became a fan favorite. Over his seven years with New York, “Godzilla” was named to two All-Star teams, and hit .292/.370/.482 with 140 homers and 540 RBIs. He was named the World Series MVP in 2009 after securing the Yankees’ 27th World Championship with one of the greatest World Series performances of all-time. In that series, he hit .615 with three homers and eight RBIs. After the Yankees, Matsui went on to play with the Angels, A’s and Rays before announcing his retirement this past December. *get your tickets to Hideki Matsui bobblehead day from our friends at TiqIQ!
