PLAYERS: Matt Barnes
TEAMS: Boston Red Sox
In what came as a shocking move on Wednesday, the Boston Red Sox promoted pitching prospect Matt Barnes from Double-A Portland to Triple-A Pawtucket with only a handful of regular season games left. Barnes, the Red Sox first round draft pick in 2011 from the University of Connecticut, hasn’t had the ideal season fans were expecting from him prior to the beginning of the season. In 24 starts with the Sea Dogs, Barnes has gone 5-10 with a 4.33 ERA in 108 innings. His strikeout numbers were impressive as he struck out 135 strikeouts. The month of August hasn’t been kind to him either as he has gone 0-3 in four starts with a 4.12 ERA in 19 innings. Some suggest that he is pitching better than his numbers actually indicate. Tonight, he will make his Triple-A debut with the Pawsox against the Syracuse Chiefs at McCoy Stadium as the Pawtucket tries to close out the IL North Division Title by the end of the weekend. It is uncertain how many starts Barnes will get with Pawsox but with the te...

Your Morning Dump...where Victorino is suddenly a free agent bargain.

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. The three-year, $39 million deal that the Sox gave to Shane Victorino in December was subject to considerable scrutiny. No other club was willing to come close to the $13 million a year that the Sox gave the...

Shane Victorino’s Unique Offensive Adjustment Might Actually Be Result of Simple Logic

BOSTON — Shane Victorino doesn’t want to talk about it. Then again, there might not be much to talk about. Victorino, who is typically a switch-hitter, has been hitting solely right-handed of late, even against right-handed pitchers. It’s a very unique adjustment by the 32-year-old outfielder, although the reasoning behind Victorino’s change might actually be quite simple...

Shane Victorino: Every little thing gonna be all right

The Guru Contributing Writer Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino has been battling back issues and a left hamstring injury, but as his Bob Marley walk up song says, "don't worry about a thing." Tuesday night, Victorino hit his 100th career home run in the third inning, added home run 101 in the fifth and had a career-high seven RBI as the Red Sox clobbered the...

Red Sox' Jacoby Ellsbury hopes to play today

Boston Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury exited last night's game against the Baltimore Orioles with a foot injury. There was concern that the ailment was severe, but X-rays came back negative and Ellsbury told reporters -- including Jason Mastrodonato of MLB.com -- that he hopes to be in Boston's starting lineup for today's series finale against the O's. ...

John Lackey Says Goal Is for Team to Win Games, Not Concerned About Individual Record (Video)

Despite John Lackey recording his 17th quality start of the season, he walks away with the no-decision Wednesday night after giving up three runs on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings of work. The ND doesn’t mean much to the right-hander, however, as he was less concerned about his individual record and just happy the team was able to come away with a win after staging a late-inning comeback...

Dempster May Get His Final 2013 Start Tonight

(AP Photo/The Canadian Press, Nathan Denette)To paraphrase the Lloyd Bridges character in the movie 'Airplane!', Ryan Dempster couldn't have picked a worse time to pitch poorly. As CSNNE.com's Sean McAdam points out, Dempster has been in a funk since his July 11th start against Seattle. Now that Clay Buchholz is set to return in about 10 days—and with a bunch of...

Jerry Remy To Miss Balance Of 2013 Season

NESN announced late last night that Red Sox icon Jerry Remy will miss the remainder of the 2013 season. Remy has been away from the broadcast booth since August 16th, when his son Jared was charged with the murdering his girlfriend. Remy released the following statement, "I am full of grief for the Martel family. My thoughts and prayers continue to go out to them. My wife and...

Carpe Avis!: Sox Swim Upstream & Beat O's, 4-3

(Photo by Jim Rogash/Getty Images)It's too bad the Red Sox didn't make last night's comeback against the Seattle Mariners. That way, the metaphor of salmon swimming upstream would work geographically. But, maybe there are some carp swimming up the Chesapeake Bay. We digress. Mike Carp flared a little looper that scored the eighth-inning winning run in a 4-3 comeback...

Red Sox Fan Falls Over Seats Celebrating Victorino Home Run

A.B. One minute you’re enjoying a good old fashioned Orioles-beatdown by your hometown Red Sox (8/27/13), the next you’re falling over tiny wooden seats into a pile of sticky peanut shells. And while Mrs. Derek Lowe-Shirt didn’t seem injured by the fall, it took an entire group of people to pull her from the ground since the amount of room between the rows at Fenway Park is...

White Sox-Red Sox Preview

The last time Ryan Dempster took the mound, he couldn't catch a break - from the Yankees or, later, the commissioner's office. The right-hander will look to get it together on Friday night as he leads the Boston Red Sox into a three-game series with the streaking Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park. In his last start, Dempster (6-9, 4.77 ERA) was pounded by New York, surrendering...

White Sox Serve as Red Sox’ Final Respite Before Brutal Home Stretch

Baseball’s schedule-makers did the Red Sox no favors in the final month or so of the regular season. Thus, it might be important for Boston to take advantage when a bad Chicago White Sox team visits Fenway Park for three games this weekend. After facing the Pale Hose, Boston has eight series left. Six of those are against potential or likely playoff teams: Detroit, the New York...
