Stove Popper of the Bergen Record says free-agent reliever Matt Capps is likely headed back to the Twins, according to a ‘smart source.’
Also, Popper says the Mets are a very unlikely landing spot for Brad Lidge.
Matthew Cerrone: From what I can gather, while the Red Sox, Angels, Mets and Blue Jays have all contacted his agent, Capps would very much like to return to the Twins and the Twins would like to have him back. The two sides have been in contact on and off since the season ended, but perhaps they are ready to work out a new deal. This is fine by me, by the way, since I still Capps as a middle reliever. He can be better than what he showed last year. But, even still, he shouldn’t be a closer. Instead, I see the Mets signing a guy like Francisco Cordero, who is also likely to accept a one-year deal.
As for Lidge, I recall hearing a few years ago that he had no interest in signing with a team in New York City. So, based on Popper’s tweet, I assume that hasn’t changed.
