On Tuesday night the Washington Nationals designated left handed starting pitcher Matt Chico for assignment. Now the Nationals will have 10 days to either trade him, release him or outright him to the minors.
Chico’s most successful season with the Nationals was in 2007 when he started 31 games and had a 7 and 9 record with a 4.63 era. That year he led the Nats in wins, games started, innings pitched and strikeouts. In 2008 he started the year as the Nats number 2 pitcher but got off to a bad start and after some early struggles was sent down to the minors. While down in the minors it was discovered that he needed Tommy John surgery.
He did not pitch at all in the majors in 2009 but did make 15 starts in the minor leagues after having recovered from his Tommy John surgery. Between A and AA ball he started 15 games, pitched in 61.1 innings and had a 3.96 era. Having been fully recovered from Tommy John surgery by the 2010 season he managed to start in 26 minor league games where he had a 3.62 era and even made an appearance in the major leagues playing for the Nats. He started in 1 games for the Nats in 2010 pitching in 5 innings while giving up 2 earned runs on 6 hits and struck out 3 batters.
