PLAYERS: Matt Garza
TEAMS: Chicago Cubs
Matt Garza has taken a step forward in his recovery as he's thrown on flat ground for the first time.  Cubs pitcher Matt Garza threw on flat ground Saturday, the first time he's done so since he came out of his last start one week ago with cramping in his right triceps. Garza will throw a bullpen session on Monday, but he was not expected to start until late next week. The subject of trade rumors, Garza will not start before Tuesday's non-waiver Trade Deadline, but the right-hander could make his first start back against one of the teams interested in him — the Dodgers. The Cubs travel to Los Angeles for three games next Friday. "Everything's gradually progressing and he's doing much better," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said Saturday about Garza (5-7, 3.91 ERA), who was pulled from his last outing after three innings. "We'll try to get him out there late next week. Everything is going really well. Everything's getting better each day."

Why the Cubs will trade Ryan Dempster for whatever they can get

I'm sure everyone is as tired of the Ryan Dempster Saga as I am, but all along I had been assuming offering him arbitration at the end of the season was a no-brainer for the Cubs. If they can't get at least something decent in return, they could offer arbitration and would receive a supplemental pick in next year's draft if he declined. I had also assumed Dempster would...

Cubs' Garza won't pitch before trade deadline

Chicago Cubs pitcher Matt Garza won't pitch again before Tuesday's trade deadline after an MRI revealed a slight fluid buildup in his right triceps area. Garza left his last start after three innings at St. Louis on Saturday when he experienced cramps. The Cubs decided to give Garza an extra couple of days rest before he underwent the MRI. Cubs manager Dale Sveum said the...

Should the Dodgers try to include Soriano in a Dempster deal?

With the Dodgers and Cubs still cahtting about Ryan Dempster, another name has fallen into the deal: highly paid Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano. Soriano is involved in the talks between the Cubs and Dodgers along with Dempster, and this would be a huge move if the Cubs were able to package him and his massive contract with Dempster, and get him out of Wrigley. While Soriano...

Potential deadline trades

Nearly every player on the Cubs is a potential trade candidate so talking about each one would be exhaustive and pointless. Luis Valbuena is a trade candidate though why any team would trade for him, I don't know. It's not like there was a line of teams wanting to sign him after he was DFA'd and he's not been very good so it's safe say that he's a candidate...

MRI reveals fluid in Matt Garza’s Triceps

An MRI on Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Matt Garza’s elbow revealed no damage, however, there is fluid in the injured area and Garza is not expected to make another start until next week. MLB.com beat writer Carrie Muskat reports that Garza is feeling better, but will not be able to start another game for at least a week. Garza, a seven year veteran that has been speculated in...

The Children Are The Future- Cubs Minor League Update Sponsored by The Coast Guard

Iowa Beef Castle was 1-3 with a BB and his 6th HR of the year. Vitters went 1-5 with a SB which is a rarity and Jay Jackson continues to suck in every single role possible giving up 3 ER in .1 IP to lose the game. Smokies No Game Daytona Ronald Torreyes has resurrected his prospect status. After a horrible start he has been his usual contact heavy self hitting over .300 in both June...

Dodgers, Cubs Still Talking Dempster, Soriano, LaHair

The Dodgers and Cubs have been working diligently on a trade for Ryan Dempster. Talks have been going for over a month now, that of course has led to what now is a major impasse. We’ve heard the dialogue between the two teams has come to almost a complete halt, though both sides still hope they can come to a deal. The Dodgers have talked multiple scenarios with the Cubs, involving...

Cubs walk-off with win over Cardinals

CHICAGO (AP) -- Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning Sunday that lifted the Chicago Cubs over the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2. Starlin Castro led off the 10th with a single against Trevor Rosenthal (0-1) and Rizzo followed with his seventh homer. James Russell (5-0) worked an inning for the win. The Cubs are 12-3 in their last 15 home games. A struggling Carlos Beltran...

Cardinals fall to Cubs

CHICAGO (AP) -- Reed Johnson saw only one pitch in the game, and that was all he needed to have a big impact with a little hit. Pinch hitting in the seventh inning, Johnson drove in the go-ahead with a bunt single and the Chicago Cubs got past St. Louis 3-2 Saturday, ending the Cardinals' four-game winning streak. Johnson caught the Cardinals by surprise when he squared up...

Podcasting the Cubs

Before gallivanting off to the hinterlands of Molina-eque interwebs, Berselius recorded a podcast with longtime reader, sometime commenter sitrick2. We talked the Cubs for about an hour, including talk of prospects, the Dempster situation based on what we knew on Wednesday (not much), and The Future. We also talked some Breaking Bad, Parks and Rec, and other TV stuff to close out the podcast.

Cubs 3, Cardinals 2

Pinch hitter Reed Johnson drove in the go-ahead with a bunt single in the seventh inning and the Chicago Cubs got past St. Louis 3-2 Saturday, ending the Cardinals' four-game winning streak. The Cubs had lost five in a row to St. Louis. Chicago has won nine of its last 11 overall at Wrigley Field. Johnson caught the Cardinals by surprise when he squared up on the first pitch...

Kelly gets quality start but not win vs. Cubs

CHICAGO (AP) -- St. Louis rookie Joe Kelly is piling up plenty of positive impressions, just not a lot of wins. Kelly wound up on the losing end again Saturday after pinch hitter Reed Johnson drove in the go-ahead with a bunt single in the seventh inning, giving the Chicago Cubs a 3-2 victory and ending the Cardinals' four-game winning streak. Despite the loss, Kelly (1-4)...
