Justin Verlander’s 2012 All-Star Game start lasted just one inning, as he threw 35 pitches and coughed up five runs on four hits to an aggressive National League lineup. Max Scherzer’s outing Tuesday in the 2013 Midsummer Classic won’t be any longer, no matter what happens in the first. Leyland said Max Scherzer will go one inning in the ASG because he threw "quite a few" pitches (122, most for him in '13) his last start. — Ashley Dunkak (@AshleyDunkak) July 16, 2013 Scherzer should be plenty rested coming out of the All-Star break, then. He lost to the Texas Rangers on Saturday night, spoiling his perfect 13-0 mark open the year. but he won’t make another start until Monday, July 22, when the Tigers take on the Chicago White Sox.

Tigers' Scherzer emerges among AL's best

Max Scherzer finally lost Saturday night in his final start before the All-Star break, but that rough outing did little to detract from what the Detroit right-hander has accomplished over the last year. On a staff that includes former MVP Justin Verlander, Scherzer has earned the most attention lately. At 28, he's in the prime of his career, and whether he starts Tuesday'...

Max Scherzer signed autographs for military personnel prior to the All Star Game

Max Scherzer started the All Star Game for the American League and promptly retired Brandon Phillips, Carlos Beltran and Joey Votto in order.  However, that was far from the best thing Max did on Tuesday.  Prior to the game, Scherzer signed autographs for dozens of military personnel who were allowed on to the field. As Hardball Talk said, Scherzer stopping to sign autographs was...

Max Scherzer named the AL starter for the All-Star Game

Moments ago Tigers RHP Max Scherzer was named the AL starter for the MLB All-Star Game at Citi Field in New York Tuesday. After posting a 13-1 record with a 3.19 ERA and 152 strikeouts, Scherzer seemed like the likely choice for manager Jim Leyland to start things out for the American League. Scherzer’s start also marks the second straight year that a Tigers pitcher starts the...

Tigers' Justin Verlander exits with quad injury

Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander, who had a no-hitter through 6 2/3 innings, left today's game against the Rangers with what is considered to be a tight quad muscle, the Tigers announced. Justin Verlander left today's game with a tight right quad muscle. #Tigers — Detroit Tigers (@tigers) July 14, 2013 We don't know if it is a strained quad muscle or some...

MLB Game Picks - Tuesday: July 16, 2013

The All Star Game is tonight and I supposed I should pick who is going to win. After all, the road to October starts here. That was only slightly sarcastic. Home field advantage in the World Series is sort of a big deal. We could debate whether something so important should be decided by an exhibition game. I would be against the idea. But there it is. Despite having to get most...

Tigers help AL win All-Star game

The Tigers were not only well-represented at the All-Star Game at New York's Citi Field, they represented well in the American League's 3-0 shutout of the National League. First, Tigers starter Max Scherzer, 13-1 so far this season, started for the AL and pitched a perfect first inning. He retired Cincinnati's Brandon Phillips on a flyout, St. Louis' Carlos Beltran...

Tigers rumors: Max Scherzer will wait until after the season to discuss contract

The American League's starting pitcher for tonight's All-Star Game, Max Scherzer, is in line for a nice contract extension.  However, he will wait until after the season to discuss the potential new contract.  As is the case with most Scott Boras clients, Scherzer and Boras want to let the season play out before a deal is struck.  It's a risky proposition in some...

Verlander, Tigers shut out Rangers

Justin Verlander held Texas hitless until the seventh inning, and the Detroit Tigers backed their ace with three home runs in a 5-0 victory over the Rangers on Sunday. Mitch Moreland's two-out double to right-center broke up Verlander's bid for his third career no-hitter. Verlander (10-6) left the game after the seventh with a tight right quad muscle, having allowed just...

Verlander strives to live up to expectations

DETROIT -- Everyone still worried or even panicking about Justin Verlander can stand down for now. Verlander nearly no-hit a Texas Rangers team in the top 5 in the American League in batting without having his best stuff Sunday. Verlander improved to 10-6 with a 3.50 ERA as the Tigers (52-42) defeated the Rangers (54-41), 5-0. Just for comparison's sake, Verlander was 9-5...

Fantasy Baseball All-Star Break Rankings - Pitchers & Catchers

Max Scherzer is the clear cut favorite for the AL Cy Young Award, but in the NL its a tight race between Adam Wainwright and Clayton Kershaw. Wainwright is getting more run support, leading to more W and if he reaches 20, then there is no debate. Wainwright also has walked 20 less batters in 1.1 more innings pitched, and by 20 less batters I mean he has walked 15 batters all season...

Harvey, Scherzer named starters for All-Star Game

Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - New York Mets ace Matt Harvey and Detroit Tigers right-hander Max Scherzer have been selected as the starting...

MLB All-Star Game Live: Max Scherzer, Matt Harvey Set to Start With Home Field Advantage on Line

12 p.m. ET: Some fans love the All-Star Game, and some hate it. Some think rewarding home field advantage in the World Series to the winner is fair, and some do not. The chatter surrounding the premise of the All-Star Game is often more exciting than the actual game, but love it or not, the game will still happen tonight at 8 p.m. This year’s affair is packed with the usual big...

Orioles pitcher Chris Tillman added to AL All-Star roster

Source: Mitchell Layton/Getty Images North America Chris Tillman has been added to the American League All-Star team as a replacement for Justin Verlander. Verlander will not be available to pitch in the All-Star game since he is pitching on Sunday. The selection of Tillman is a bit questionable. While Tillman has 11 victories this season his other numbers do not stand out. Tillman...

Rangers drop another one in Detroit

I don’t remember ever being this relieved to see the All-Star Break.  Although I probably say that every year, this year I really mean it.  Between the injuries and the fatigue that seems to have infected the remaining players lately, I’m ready for my boys to have a break.  I need one too. The Rangers were nearly no-hit today in Detroit. Not really a surprising statement,...
