I was working on the Met Wiki and I was looking around and what did I see? A link to May 11. (Spacial thanks to Giants27, Wendy Adair and Andrew Wharton for all the help on the Wiki)
What happen today that made May 11 a link that someone wrote on? We try to only put big things on that page. Well, two things happen on this day in Mets history. what is written next was found on the page of May 11 of the Met Wiki.
1. 1964: The Mets played there first doubleheader in Shea stadium against the Cardinals. The Mets won the first game 4-1 and lost the next one 10-1.
2. 1972: the Mets traded Charlie Williams to the San Francisco Giants for Willie Mays.
We would love for you to add stuff you know about to this date or any other, or any other link on the Met Wiki.
I think that these are big things Mets history. The Mets getting Willie Mays was big them. Granted, he was 41 and not as good any more. But getting Willie on your team is always a big deal.
He did not hit well in New York, in about two season in New York he hit about .240 with 14 Home Runs and 44 RBI and only playing 135 games.
He was part of the Mets that made the World Series in 1973, as we know the Mets lost the World Series in seven games. Mays retired after 1973.
As we saw, Mays was not the only big thing that happened on May 11. The Mets first Double header at Shea, they split the games with the Cardinals. But just seeing Mets first is always fun and interesting.
Hopefully today we will be Abel to add more things to the list of May 11. Maybe the first No-Hitter, Johan Santana can help that. Or the first Met to hit four Home Runs in a game, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado or David Wright will need to get hot. Or maybe in a few days the we will be able to write a new team record on the win streak. four times the Mets have won 11 in a row, maybe we can get to 12 this time.
Good Luck Mets, go get the Braves!
