What Andrew McCutchen has done to this point in the 2012 season almost defies adjectives. Even with his rare 0-for-4 Wednesday in the 9-6 victory at Colorado, the Pittsburgh Pirates' All-Star center fielder is batting .369 with 22 home runs and 65 RBI. From May 5 onward, he's batting .400. It's been one of the greatest offensive stretches in the 126-year history of the franchise, and that's no small praise in the context of Willie Stargell, Roberto Clemente, Honus Wagner, Ralph Kiner and many other Hall of Famers. "What you're seeing is special," manager Clint Hurdle said. "We started to see it in the first half last year. He was tremendous for us, and then he kind of lost his way pulling the ball and swinging for the fences in the second half. Now you're seeing him stay within himself, hit the ball to all fields." The best part for the Pirates and the fans who put up with any or all of the 19-year losing streak that remains intact i...

McCutchen named NL Player of the Week…again

Andrew McCutchen is just tearing it up right now.  After appearing last week in the Home Run Derby and then in the All-Star Game, he comes back and has a fantastic 3 game series against Milwaukee (even though the Buccos didn’t win the series).  It’s awesome to note that he won this award for the second week in a row! His stats are just amazing: (These are all courtesy of the...

First Pitch: How Much Would a McCutchen Extension Cost This Year?

During the opening weeks of Spring Training, the Pittsburgh Pirates made one of the best moves, if not the best move, we’ve seen from this management group. I’m not talking about the deal that brought A.J. Burnett to Pittsburgh in the first week of camp. I’m talking about the extension given to Andrew McCutchen. Can you imagine if McCutchen would have put up the season we...

Andrew McCutchen’s 56-game run among baseball’s best ever?

While the wiry Pittsburgh centerfielder with dreadlocks continues his march toward his first MVP, does the season he has put together rank among...

Andrew McCutchen In Midst of Historic Breakout Season

As we approach the latter stages of the MLB regular season, individual players’ statistics start to take shape and we can begin really gauging what type of campaign they are putting together. I did this yesterday when analyzing the top 8 current contenders for NL MVP. The man who came out #1 on that list also happens to be the hottest player in all of baseball. And he just so...

Pirates Notebook: Extra Time Pays Off For Bedard; McCutchen and Walker Stay Hot

When Manager Clint Hurdle had the opportunity to shuffle the rotation for the second half of the season, he decided to use it to his advantage. Heading into the All-Star break, Erik Bedard was struggling on the mound. Over his last five starts, he allowed 21 runs over 23.2 innings. After his last trip to the mound, Bedard said wasn’t doing anything different, that just they were...

The Case For Walker’s Extension

Right after the Andrew McCutchen extension in the spring, I posited that Neil Walker may be the next Pirate signed to a long-term extension.  There were some discussions between the two sides, but it has been suspected that the Pirates were leaning more towards a Jose Tabata-style of deal and Walker wanted to be paid on a more moderate scale. That post was prior to the start of...

Thursday morning food for thought

As the trade deadline approaches, Dave Cameron is once again doing his trade value series at FanGraphs. I've been watching it semi-closely with the anticipation that Andrew McCutchen will probably be in the top three or so, but something obviously caught my eye in today's rankings: Justin Upton dropped from fifth last year to 28th this year.  A year ago, it seemed hard...

Pirates Notebook: Who Says the Bucs Don’t Have Power?

Alvarez blasted No. 18 on the season in Colorado on Wednesday. Entering game action on Wednesday, Andrew McCutchen (.531 avg, 1.594 OPS) and Neil Walker (.490 avg, 1.357 OPS) were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the Majors in the month of July in average and OPS. But despite those two combining to go 0-for-8 on the day, Pittsburgh was still able to pull together a huge win in Colorado...

Pirates 4, Marlins 3

Pedro Alvarez hit his 20th homer of the season, Andrew McCutchen had two hits to boost his batting average to a major-league best .372 and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Miami Marlins 4-3 on Friday night. Kevin Correia (7-6) overcame a shaky start to win his fifth consecutive decision. Joel Hanrahan worked out of a two-on, one-out jam for 27th save as the Pirates moved to a season...
