The Pirates have not yet reached agreements with their two remaining arbitration eligible players (Garrett Jones and Casey McGehee), but it looks like they will soon.
Tuesday night was the deadline for arb-eligible players and teams to exchange 2012 salary figures. Jones asked for $2.5 million while the Pirates submitted $2.25 million. McGehee asked for $2.725 million and the Bucs submitted $2.35 million.
Those differences are pretty small, and I’d expect both to reach a deal in between before going to a hearing. If not, such a hearing would occur in early-to-mid February.
Tim’s updated estimate of the 40-man roster payroll now stands just above $46 million.
Exciting stuff, I know. Hopefully there will be some REAL news soon…

The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced that they’ve added six non-roster invitees to Spring Training. The new additions are Gerrit Cole, Michael Crotta, Ramon Cabrera, Eric Fryer, Tony Sanchez, and Robbie Grossman.
Of the group, only Crotta and Fryer have major league experience, both spending time in the majors in 2011. I don’t see any of the group making the majors out...

Pirates, Hanrahan, Morton avoid arbitration
The Pirates agreed to terms on a 1-year deal with closer Joel Hanrahan and starter Charlie Morton. Both players are entering their 1st season of arbitration eligibility.
Hanrahan’s deal is worth $4.1 million after a stellar season where he posted a 1.83 ERA over 68 2/3 innings. He racked up 40 saves in 44 opportunities. His K/9 dipped down to 8.0 from 12.9 in 2010, so that...

Bill Brink of the Post-Gazette reports that the Pittsburgh Pirates have agreed to a one year, $2.445 M deal with pitcher Charlie Morton. The deal allows the two sides to avoid Morton’s first year of arbitration. Morton was originally projected for a $2.1 M salary, per MLBTR’s arbitration estimates. The 2012 40-man roster/payroll page has been updated with the new amount.
Pittsburgh Pirates Concert Series Announced
To coincide with their surely mediocre 2012 season, the Pittsburgh Pirates have lined up some surely mediocre bands to attract another fan or two to the ballpark this season.
From Bill Brink at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:
The Pirates announced the rest of their summer concert series today.

This Date in Pirates History: January 17
On this date in 1895 the Pittsburgh Pirates traded pitcher Red Ehret, along with cash to the St Louis Browns for pitcher Pink Hawley. Ehret was 26 at the time of the trade and had played for the Pirates for three seasons compiling a 53-59 3.79 record. In 1894 he went 19-21 5.14 in 346.2 innings. Hawley was just 22 years old and while he had a poor record at 30-58 in three years with...

Pirates Avoid Arbitration With Evan Meek
The Pirates have avoided arbitration with starting pitcher Evan Meek by signing him to a one-year deal worth $875K (with some performance-based incentives). This leaves just Garrett Jones and Casey McGehee for Pirates that are eligible for arbitration.

Ludwick to the Reds
The Reds signed Ryan Ludwick to a one-year contract, and Redleg Nation is not impressed:
File this under “It could be worse”: Best thing about Ryan Ludwick is that he doesn’t spell his name “J-u-a-n P-i-e-r-r-e” or “R-i-c-k A-n-k-i-e-l.”
Ryan Ludwick’s career certainly seems to be fading as he ages into his early 30s. Teams may remember his outstanding 2008...
