ST. LOUIS -- Too bad balloting for the NL MVP award closes before the playoffs begin. If voting members of the Baseball Writers Association of American had another week, they would have been able to watch the top three candidates on the same field at the same time during the Pirates-Cardinals NL Division Series. Maybe then they would cast their votes for the right man. Based on what I've been reading and hearing, that isn't happening. Andrew McCutchen, the man who makes the Pirates go, appears to be the popular pick and he certainly makes a worthy candidate. So does the Cardinals' Matt Carpenter, who entered spring training trying to win the second base job and ended the season as the runs and hits leader on the NL's best offensive team. But the most deserving candidate is Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina, and by a sizable margin. You just need to look beyond the numbers to see this. You have to see how Carlos Martinez pitches after a visit from Molina. This happen...

Despite September woes, Mujica on Cardinals roster

ST. LOUIS -- Edward Mujica is on the Cardinals' roster for the NL division series -- even after losing his job as closer in mid-September. St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said Wednesday that Mujica's role would be "right-handed reliever." Mujica likely made it at the expense of rookie lefty Sam Freeman. Matheny also said there wouldn't be any lineup wrinkles...

Matheny announces NLDS roster, stays mum on Game 3 starter

ST. LOUIS -- Cardinals manager Mike Matheny typically does not like to reveal any more of his plans than he must. Keeping with his close-to-the-vest ways, he did not say who would be starting Game 3. But he might have dropped a pretty nice hint when he said that Shelby Miller and Michael Wacha will be available to work out of the bullpen Thursday. The implication: Joe Kelly will...

St. Louis' Mr. October: Freese steps up big yet again in postseason play

ST. LOUIS -- Carlos Beltran hit the monster homer and Adam Wainwright delivered the dominant start for the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday afternoon. But as Wainwright dissected the 9-1 victory over the Pirates in the NL Division Series, third baseman David Freese was the player he called, "St. Louis' version of Mr. October." "He doesn't need to be saying that...

What a difference a year makes: Cards' rookies get set for postseason run

ST. LOUIS -- On the day of the NL Wild Card game last year, Seth Maness was traveling from his North Carolina home to California. He says he boarded his flight right around the time the Braves' Andrelton Simmons hit that lazy infield fly that led to all sorts of controversy in the Cardinals' 6-3 victory. "I didn't hear what happened until I landed," Maness...

Cardinals going with Lynn in Game 2

Lance Lynn's strong finish has earned him the start in Game 2 of the National League division series for the St. Louis Cardinals. Lynn (15-10, 3.97) worked six scoreless innings in the Central clincher Friday night against the Cubs. He won his last two starts to end a skid in which he was 0-5 with a 5.44 ERA in eight outings. He also has pitched the last two postseasons. Matheny...

NL Preview: St. Louis Cardinals At Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates downed the Cincinnati Reds 6-2 on Tuesday night, earning the right to face the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLDS. The NL Central rivals faced off 19 times in 2013, with the Pirates taking ten of those contests. In their most recent matchup, the Cardinals swept the Pirates at home, outscoring them 26-10. Below is my preview of the NLDS, broken down into...

Cardinals choose Joe Kelly to start Game 3 of NLDS

On Thursday, St. Louis Cardinals' manager Mike Matheny named Joe Kelly as the Game 3 starter of the NLDS against the Pittsburgh Pirates.  The game is scheduled for a Sunday start at 4:30 PM Eastern Time in Pittsburgh. As reported by Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com, Kelly was a logical choice given his success on the road and specifically at PNC Park this season. In two ...

Beltran's HR keys Cards' rout of Pirates in Game 1

Adam Wainwright started the rally with a full-count walk. By the time it was over, the St. Louis Cardinals' ace had quite a cushion. Carlos Beltran's three-run homer sparked an NL division series-record seven-run third inning and Wainwright kept the Pittsburgh Pirates down with seven stingy innings in a 9-1 rout to open their NL division series Thursday night. During the...

Old Hoss previews Pirates-Cardinals

Editor's note: Old Hoss Radbourn might be the best pitcher in baseball history that you have never heard of. And rightfully so, since he pitched in the late 1800s . The Hall of Famer put up legendary numbers in his 11-year career, with his best season coming in 1884 when he pitched the last 27 games for the Providence Grays. He won 26 of those outings and then picked up three...

NLDS Playoff Injury Preview: St. Louis Cardinals vs Pittsburgh Pirates

The St. Louis Cardinals came through an extremely tough NL Central battle to claim the best record in the National League. The Pittsburgh Pirates couldn't quite win that battle, but they did pull away from the Reds late on to seize home field advantage in the wild card game, then finished off Cincinnati earlier this week in a raucous PNC Park. The Pirates are playing in their...

Beltran slugs, Wainwright pitches Cards to 9-1 win

The Pittsburgh Pirates the last National League team to qualify for a division series since that format was instituted in 1995 got off very much on the wrong foot today against the kings of divisional play. The Cardinals who have won eight of the previous 10 division series in which they have participated jumped Pittsburgh starter A.J. Burnett for seven runs in the third inning...

NLDS 2013 Preview: Pitching

We've broken down the positions, now it's time to look at the pitchers.  The match-ups have been set for GMs 1 & 2, with the Pirates looking to toss Liriano and Morton in GMs 3 & 4 versus the to be determined order from the Cardinals that will include Joe Kelly and Shelby Miller.  All WAR information is from FanGraphs.  GM1: Adam Wainwright (6.2) vs...

NLDS Preview: Cardinals Hope to Contain Rival Pirates

In a battle of National League Central foes, the St. Louis Cardinals take on the Pittsburgh Pirates in the National League Division Series starting this evening at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals earned the division crown, overtaking the Pirates over the last two weeks of the regular season. The Redbirds have the experience while the Pirates have a feeling of destiny after reaching...

Love Forever & Always

Dear Adam,  Hi, honey!  I know you are exhausted and probably getting some much deserved rest, but I just have a few quick things to say before you nod off. First of all, I am so proud of you! Even though the Cardinals are widely regarded as a big mean bully in this NLDS series, you managed to go out there today and dazzle everyone with your charm and handsomeness and HOLY...
