Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that at least 5 teams are interested troubled outfielder Melky Cabrera. Sherman adds that the Mets and Yankees have not expressed interest in Cabrera.
Cabrera who was suspended 50 games for testing for Testosterone, is a unique free agent, as when he was suspended, he was the hottest hitter in the National League. But no one knows how Cabrera will perform when he is clean. The good news for the teams interested in Melky, is that they won't be paying market value for someone who accomplished what Melky did by hitting 346/.390/.516 with 11 HR's, 60 RBI's and a 158 OPS+ in 501 plate appearances thanks to his positive test and attempt to cover it up.
Some baseball insiders have suggested a one-year deal worth $3-$5mm all the way up to a one-year deal worth $8-$10mm for Melky. Whatever he signs, he will look for the best situation to help rebuild his image and reputation.
