Outfielder Melky Cabrera, who was acquired by the Giants in November 2011, would like to stay with the team after the 2012 season according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle. “Of course I would,” said Cabrera. “I'm a free agent next winter, but the fans and Giants organization have treated me very well, so I would welcome staying with the Giants.” Shea adds that Cabrera has instructed his representatives to let the Giants management know of his intentions to stay with the team. Cabrera, 27, is hitting .353/.391/.519 with 8 HR's, 44 RBI's and a 158 OPS+. Recently, the Dodgers signed Andre Ethier to a five-year $85 million deal, and with the season Cabrera is having people could say he could manage a similar deal. Ethier, 30, is a lifetime .291/.363/.480 hitter with 119 HR's, 501 RBI's and a 124 OPS+. Cabrera, is a lifetime .283/.336/.411 hitter with 66 HR's, 401 RBI's and a 99 OPS+. Fielding, Cabrera's UZR throughout his career is -24.5 and Ethier's UZR, -24.8, but while Cabrera has accumulated -6.7 UZR in 2011 and -1.0 so far this season, Ethier had a 5.3 UZR in  2011 and sports a 4.2 UZR so far in 2012, making him the better fielder among the two at this moment. I don't think the Giants should go as far as a five-year, $85 million deal for Cabrera even though he has improved, quite a bit, since his horrible year in Atlanta. And even if Cabrera is peaking at age 27, which makes perfect sense, I don't think he's going to repeat a season like the one he's having right now. If I were Brian Sabean, I would wait for the reminder of the season and see how he finishes the year and try to sign him to a three-year, and somewhere between the $30-$35 million range. That would be a $4 million raise from his 2012 salary ($6 million) and something that will assure the Giants he'll be with the team during his peak years at a reasonable price. After all, Cabrera has hit .322/.357/.486 with 26 HR's, 131 RBI's and a 133 OPS+ in the past season and a half with the Giants and Royals.
