Clint Hurdle has made a major impact on the Pittsburgh Pirates since choosing to manage them at the start of the 2011 season. He's created a new atmosphere in the clubhouse, replacing the mundane, defeatist spirit left behind by John Russell, with a loud, energetic voice of optimism. With a group as young as the Pirates, that type of message can go a long way. Especially if the team starts winning. As a motivator, Hurdle is one of the best in baseball. As a strategist, he's, at times, horrible.During this season, the Pirates have been at the mercy of Clint Hurdle's decision to roll with a starter for far too long, resulting in games that go from bad to ugly. Too many times this season, the Pirates have held a lead or tie game late, only to see Bryan Morris give up a run resulting in a loss. And don't get me started on the match ups at the plate. Yes, the Pirates have 94 wins, so maybe this is nitpicking a tad. But at the same time, these decisions have cost the Pirates. In fact, one would have to wonder how many wins the Pirates would have if Hurdle was a bench coach with a better strategist at the helm. Three? Four? Would it be enough to win the division and forego this do-or-die Wild Card game? It's tough to say; but one thing is certain: he better not play around Tuesday night. The Pirates will have nine pitchers, including seven relievers, on their roster for tomorrow night's game against the Cincinnati Reds. By deductive reasoning, that roster will include sixteen position players as well. That means the Pirates will have ample right handed and left handed bats on the bench. In other words, Justin Morneau should not see a single pitch from a left-handed pitcher, where he has a putrid .525 OPS, especially with Gaby Sanchez on the bench who has hit lefties at a .333/.463/.569 clip this year. If the Reds decide to go back to a right hander to face Sanchez, Hurdle has Garret Jones at his disposal. While Bryan Morris and Vin Mazzaro are two of the relievers on the roster, there is no reason to have either one of them pitching if the game is within four runs. This is a win or go home game and there is zero room for error. The players will have a tough enough time figuring out Cueto while shutting down one of the best offenses in the game. It's on Hurdle to put his team in the best position to accomplish both tasks. Play the match ups.Clint Hurdle will likely win Manager of the Year for what he has done to turn around this franchise and while everyone the fans may be happy just to see their team in the playoffs, the Pirates certainly have enough talent to do some damage in October. It wont be an easy task and the game tomorrow is likely to take a few years off our lives with all the drama and pulse-pounding moments. But this team really does have the chance to add a few more memories to what has already been a special season.Photo courtesy of Sports Radio Interviews

Pirates hoping for more than cameo in playoffs

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle had a vision when he replaced John Russell three years ago. Hurdle believed he could help lead the moribund franchise back to the playoffs. The vision will come to life on Tuesday night when the Pirates host the Cincinnati Reds in the NL wild-card game at PNC Park. Pittsburgh won 94 games during a remarkable regular season, securing the club...

Neil Walker treats teammates to special bottle of scotch

Pirates 2nd baseman Neil Walker was 7 years and a month old when Sid Bream of the Braves beat a Barry Bonds throw home in Game 7 of the 1992 NLCS. As a 28-year-old, he helped his hometown team finally break a 20-year streak of sub-.500 baseball since that game. And it didn't end there, as Walker and the Buccos clinched a playoff spot, showing the improvements made in the 2013...

Andrew McCutchen struck in face by line drive during practice

Tweet With the new wildcard format in the MLB Playoffs, the wildcard teams get one game to give their best effort and head to the divisional series. In the NL, that matchup will go down Tuesday night between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds. Since there’s only one game, it’s the time that teams […]

Great Moments In Unlicensed Pittsburgh Sports Merch: Unlicensed BUCN

So our Pirates have their first playoff game since 1992 tonight, and i still seem to have a few Pirates-related pieces of unlicensed and generic merch in my queue so I might as well get these all out now. With the now-or-never aspect of the one game Wild Card round, there's an off chance the Pirates season ends with a loss to the Reds. Only that isn't gonna happen, and this...

Pirates defeat Reds 6-2 in NL Wild Card game

Monday night Clint Hurdle relaxed. He helped his daughter Maddie with her math homework. He played chess with his son Christian. He spent time with family and friends in town for the festivities Tuesday. He went to bed at 10:30 p.m. It didn't sound like Hurdle did much fretting about the game Tuesday night despite the stakes: Lose to the Cincinnati Reds and the Pirates'...

Pirates' Andrew McCutchen hit in the head during batting practice

With the Pittsburgh Pirates gearing up for their one game playoff against the Cincinnati Reds, they cannot afford to have any key players go down.  So when Andrew McCutchen was hit in the head during batting practice, the team surely held its collective breath.  Fortunately, McCutchen was alright. According to an AP report, McCutchen was in the outfield shagging fly balls during...

Game 162: Pirates 4 Reds 2

In watching Sunday's regular season finale, I couldn't help but think back to March and April and think about how far things have come for this Pirate team in the last six months. In spring training, I was really down on the team because I thought that they were in line to waste another year of Andrew McCutchen's prime, ticking a year closer to 2018 without really competing...

Pittsburgh Pirates Win First Playoff Game in 21 Years

It's been a long time coming for the Pittsburgh Pirates. It has been over two decades in fact; 21 years since the Pittsburgh Pirates have won a post season game. Yes, I used the past tense on purpose. The Pirates beat their division rival, the Cincinnati Reds, 6-2 in the National League wild card game Tuesday night.  Marlon Byrd got the scoring started...

Pirates move on to NLDS after beating Reds 6-2

Andrew McCutchen was in mid-answer when teammate A.J. Burnett stuck a bottle of champagne inside the jersey of the star Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder and turned it upside down. ''Feels good,'' McCutchen said with a laugh as the bottle emptied, further drenching his already soaked uniform. ''I could get used to this.'' So could the city he plays...

Pirates beat Reds in NL wild-card

Russell Martin homered twice, Marlon Byrd also connected and the Pittsburgh Pirates roared past Cincinnati for a 6-2 victory in the NL wild-card game Tuesday night.

PNC Park and Johnny Cueto: What did sweeping the Reds get the Pirates?

When the Pirates started their weekend series with the Reds last Friday, it was clear that home field advantage was on the line. What we didn't know at the time was that by clinching home field advantage a day early with easy wins on Friday and Saturday, the Pirates also changed their mound opponent tonight from Mat Latos to Johnny Cueto (the Reds say that the reason they scratched...
