In a post to Mets 360, Brian Joura believes Daniel Murphy should be the primary choice at second base, regardless of whether or not the Mets retain Jose Reyes this winter, saying “The surprise shouldn’t be that the Mets want to play Murphy at second base if Reyes leaves – the surprise should be that he’s not the first option regardless of who plays shortstop.” I don’t necessarily disagree with Brian. Ruben Tejada certainly showed signs of maturity last season and I was particularly impressed with his ability to make contact and hit line drives, which tells me his bat speed has potentially improved along with his eye and ability to read pitches. Even so, I’m still not convinced Tejada is an everyday player just yet. And so, if Reyes stays and Murphy is relegated to a utility role, I’m not sure Murphy’s offensive value would be maximized and while the Mets would be strong defensively up the middle, it’s fair to say there is a drop off offensively between he and Murphy.
