Johan Santana pitched five innings of two-hit ball in his long-awaited return from shoulder surgery and David Wright hit an RBI single to lead the New York Mets past the Atlanta Braves 1-0 in their season opener Thursday. New York's revamped bullpen picked up for Santana and shut down the Braves, while the shortened fences at reconfigured Citi Field hardly came into play. But it wasn't all good news for the Mets, who watched new center fielder Andres Torres hobble off after re-injuring his strained calf. It was the first time since 1996 that Atlanta fielded an opening-day lineup without Chipper Jones, and the Braves were punchless at the plate. Coming off a near-record collapse last September that cost the team a playoff spot, Atlanta managed only four hits.

Mets' Santana exceeds expectations in opener

NEW YORK The New York Mets weren't looking for greatness from Johan Santana in his first Major League start in more than 18 months. Just having their southpaw ace back on the mound after a full season without him was enough. But as the two-time Cy Young award winner often tends to do, Santana exceeded expectations Thursday, throwing five shutout innings in a 1-0 Opening Day...

Santana set to return as Mets open against Braves

Johan Santana and the Atlanta Braves have the same thing in mind heading into opening day. They'd both like to put last year behind them. After an extensive recovery from shoulder surgery, Santana is set to make his first major league start in 19 months Thursday when the New York Mets host a Braves team coming off a near-record collapse that cost them a playoff spot last September...

Opening Day: The more things change...

It was great to see Johan Santana's successful return from a serious injury, combining with the revamped bullpen to shut out the Braves on Opening Day. But the Mets can't get through a day without several reminders of their numerous problems. With two on and two out in the fifth inning, the Mets had their first scoring opportunity. It was time to pinch hit for Santana, who...

Santana, Mets Can Dream For a Day

It’s pretty hard to ruin Opening Day. For at least 9 innings the fan base can hope and dream about all the best-case scenarios that were laid out throughout spring training. If they win, it’s even grander since it could be the one and only time the home team can say they are in first place. Since they are 31-20 on this special day, the Mets have put together their fair first...

Post-Game: Game 1 - Mets Outduel Braves On Opening Day

This afternoon's opening day game brought with it Johan Santana's first start in more than eighteen months. Johan was successful and efficient early before laboring in the fifth and getting a tapper back to the mound to get out of a bases loaded jam. Santana finished with five scoreless innings, allowing only two hits while walking two and striking out five. The game remained...

It Was A Good Start To The Season For The Mets

There was a crispness to the day. Both in the weather and the way the Mets played. It was a delightful day, one that gave us a glimpse of what could be when they put it all together. Hopefully, Mike Pelfrey was taking notes on Johan Santana and pitching out of trouble as he did in the fifth. The talking heads on SNY – and I’m not talking the play-by-play team – were in their...

Mets Card of the Week: 2012 David Wright

1963 TOPPS HERITAGE STICK-ONS DAVID WRIGHT Topps released its annual Heritage set a few weeks back. The 2012 edition covers the 1963 set, which is best known for including the Pete Rose rookie card. The Rose rookie is perhaps one of the top 10 most noteworthy cards in collecting history, and definitely one of the top 10 fugliest… Overall though, the 1963 Topps set is a nice one...

All’s “Wright” with Johan and Bullpen on Opening Day!

The Mets continue to add to their MLB-leading Opening Day record (now 33-18) with a 1-0 win today over the Atlanta Braves at a “new” CitiField.  After a mediocre spring, there were many questions surrounding this team, but let’s face it, when are there NOT?  Two BIG ones were answered today, those being the state of both ace Johan Santana and the Mets bullpen. I realize it’s...

MMO Mets Quotables – Opening Day Eve Edition

A new MMO feature for a new Mets season, introducing MMO Mets Quotables. “We lost Jose. We lost Carlos. We lost Frankie Rodriguez, all very, very good players. We lost some big pieces of the puzzle. But you know what you do? You bring other people in to fill those spots. You trust them. You believe in them. Now what I’ve got to have them do is believe in themselves, because that’s...

Pre-Game: New York Mets (1-0) vs. Atlanta Braves (0-1)

The First Place Mets will be back on the field to take on the Braves this afternoon, and after a day off, it feels great to have written this. The Mets showed off Citi Field and honored the late Gary Carter in style with a 1-0 win over the Bravos this past Thursday as David Wright had the only RBI and Johan Santana pitched 5 shutout innings in his return to the mound after 500 days...
