The New York Mets have reacquired right-hander Chris Schwinden, claiming him off waivers from the Yankees and optioning him to Triple-A Buffalo. In the last five weeks, Schwinden has been claimed off waivers by Toronto, Cleveland and the Yankees before the Mets got him back Thursday. Drafted by the Mets in 2008, Schwinden made three appearances - two starts - for New York and was 0-1 with a 12.46 ERA. They designated him for assignment on June 1 and he was claimed by Toronto, setting off his journey. Schwinden is 4-8 with a 4.31 ERA in 14 minor league starts this year. The Mets also recalled right-hander Pedro Beato from Triple-A Buffalo after sending righty Jeremy Hefner back to their top minor league club.

New York Times owes New York Yankees a sorry

First let me say, Happy Birthday America; and then let me tell you a story. My father’s New York Times – sports section – 07-04-2012 This morning my father was giving me his usual rhetoric by saying, “don’t worry about the Yankees because they are so far ahead in the AL East standings.” See my dad is the type that usually turns off the TV by the 7th inning if the Yankees...

Talkin’ Baseball With Mets Prospect Brandon Nimmo

Brandon Nimmo Getting Into The Swing I asked Brandon Nimmo if he had a few minutes to spare at some point before the game against the Hudson Valley Renegades on Sunday. He said, “when?” I said, “you tell me, anytime your available.” He turned around and caught the eye of his hitting coach Bobby Malek who simply nodded, and Nimmo turned back to me and said, “I have time...

Yankees Mid-Season Report Card

Eighty-one games down, eighty-one to go.  The 2012 MLB Season is officially half way over, and that means its report card time.  Grades are based on results, but also take expectations into consideration. Disclaimer:  Some of the grades may seem a little harsh because—after researching some statistics with runners in scoring position—I deducted about a half letter grade from...

Josh Thole’s contributions emblematic of Mets toughness

In the top half of the eighth inning, New York Mets catcher Josh Thole stood his ground as he was barreled over by Philadephia Phillies second baseman Mike Fontenot.  Fontenot, who was standing on second after connecting on a ground rule double earlier in the inning, attempted to score on a one-out single to left off the bat of Chase Utley.  The throw from Scott Hairston had the...

Post-Game: Lee Earns First Win of Season Over Mets, 9-2

Chris Young on Wednesday fell to 2-2 Coming into July 4, Philadelphia Phillies starter Cliff Lee had zero, zilch, nada, nothing, no wins in 13 starts on the 2012 season, but that changed in the seventh inning when the Phillies took a 3-2 lead on a pair of home runs by Chase Utley and Carlos Ruiz. Both Mets starter Chris Young and Lee exchanged 1-2-3 innings in the first and second...

Game Preview: Cubs @ Mets

The Cubs and Mets start their last series before the All-Star break tonight as the Mets look for revenge from the last Cubs/Mets series. Last night the Mets were on the verge of losing the series against the Phillies when the offense started a real, 2012 Mets style ralley and with a some good AB’s they got the runs in. Anyway, Johan Santana looks to keep the energy levels up as...

Cubs-Mets Preview

Travis Wood is one of a select few to outpitch Johan Santana this season, getting the best of his fellow left-hander last week. Accomplishing the feat on the road may prove to be more difficult. Santana looks to improve on his already stellar numbers at Citi Field when his New York Mets host Wood's Chicago Cubs in the opener of a three-game set Friday night. Chicago beat New...
