The New York Mets lost the opener of their weekend series with the Braves by the score of 3-0 tonight in Citi Field. Jonathan Niese got the start and really deserved a better fate this evening. The lefty allowed just one run, a solo shot by Jason Heyward, on five hits and a walk while striking out two. Sometimes all it takes is one bad pitch and that’s all it took for Niese to suffer the loss on the night. The bullpen, which had been solid of late, gave up the other two runs; one by Bobby Parnell in an inning of work, and the other by Jenrry Mejia who hung a curve to Dan Uggla that he blasted over the wall. Offensively, the Mets were rendered impotent by the Braves’ Paul Maholm who held the Mets scoreless for 5.1 innings while striking out six. Atlanta used five relievers to pitch the final three frames with Craig Kimbrel finishing it off to pick up his 35th save of the season.
