The New York Mets were defeated by the S.F. Giants in game one of  Monday’s twi-light double header:

Miguel Batista started for the Mets, allowing six runs –  three of which were earned — on seven hits over 3 2/3 innings:

Batista struggled to start the game allowing four straight batters reach base; including an RBI double by Pablo Sandoval and a solo-home run by Buster Posey.  After retiring the next six batters he faced, Sandoval reached safely before a four pitch walk to Posey placed runners on first and second with two-outs.  Nick Schierholtz followed the four-pitch walk be quickly depositing a waist high fastball over the right field wall to give the Giants a 5-1 lead.  The 41-year-old allowed back-to-back hits — plating the Giants sixth run of the game — to start the fourth, but after retiring the next two batters he faced, was chased from the game after walking Melky Cabrera.

MAJOR LEAGUE DEBUT:  Jeremy Hefner made his MLB debut on Monday afternoon, allowing three hits and one walk over three scoreless innings:

Following the game, Hefner said the following about the experience:

It’s a dream come true. It was my first time pitching in the big leagues and I had a good outing. Everything went well. I just wish we would have won the game. Hopefully I contributed. And I’ll go back down and keep working on my craft, and when they need me I’ll be back.”

RUNNERS IN STRANDED POSITION: The Mets were unable to take advantage of a very ineffective Tim Lincecum (5 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 5 BB), leaving a 12 runners on base while hitting just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.  The biggest culprit, Ike Davis was 0-for-4 stranding eight runners while seeing his season average drop to .138 in the process.
