Tonight the Mets fell to a resilient Astros team 4-3, despite fighting back themselves from a 3-0 deficit.  Kirk Nieuwenhuis provided some heroics tonight for the Mets with a two-out, two-run, game tying single in the seventh inning before Jed Lowrie broke the tie for good with an RBI single in the eighth for the ‘Stros.

R.A. Dickey was pretty good tonight, despite giving up his league-leading seventh home run of the year.  Matt Downs took Dickey deep as part of a three-run sixth that gave the Astros the lead at that point in the game.  It is worth noting that Dickey had not given up a hit until Jordan Schafer led off the Astros 3-run sixth with a single.  Fortunately for Dickey, the Mets would come back and get him off the hook for the loss, which ultimately ended up on the stat-line of Manny Acosta.

Although the Mets fell tonight, they showed some fight.  Also they proved what Terry Collins said to be right, this team isn’t built to overcome multiple errors and still win.  This is a team that is built off of their ability to execute cleanly and effectively.  Admittedly the errors the Mets made tonight did not directly lead to runs, it’s still worth taking note that the Mets have committed 8 errors combined in their last two losses, compared to 3 errors total in their last 5 wins.  I think this team knows that execution with always be key to their success, so for them to keep winning they need to continue to pitch well and field well, because they are not good enough to overcome themselves to win.  Offensively, besides Nieuwenhuis’ continued hitting, Andres Torres had a positive night with a successful return as he went 1-4 with an RBI and a run scored in his first full game in a Mets uniform.

Tomorrow the Mets will look to bounce back against the Astros at 8:05 with Jonathon Niese facing off against J.A. Happ.
