Mets fans go bananas after JD Martinez spoils Braves’ first no-hitter in 30 years

The Atlanta Braves pulled off the win after beating the New York Mets 4-1. It was a solid game for Atlanta as they kept New York from scoring until the ninth inning. In fact, they had a no-hitter going and it just so happened that JD Martinez spoiled it for the Braves.

There was just one out remaining in the ninth inning and the Braves needed one more to seal the combined no-hitter. If Atlanta accomplished that goal, it would have been the first no-no for the franchise in 30 years.

But JD Martinez had other plans. The Mets star didn’t care that the Braves were about to make franchise history not seen since 1994. Instead, the veteran outfielder went yard and completely spoiled the no-hitter the Braves had going throughout the entire game.

Although the Braves couldn’t complete the combined no-hitter, Max Fried had another eye-popping performance. He went seven hit-less innings on Saturday. It was the second time in three games he’s thrown six hitless innings and is the first Braves pitcher since 1938 to do so, per OptaSTATS.

“Max Fried of the Braves is the first MLB pitcher to pitch 6.0+ innings and finish with no hits allowed twice in a span of three appearances since Johnny Vander Meer did so with his back-to-back no-hitters in 1938.”

It was a great performance from the Braves’ rotation but Mets fans just couldn’t help but love JD Martinez’s home run late in the game. It was still a loss but the home run gave the fanbase enough juice to appreciate the effort from the veteran outfielder.

Mets’ 2024 playoff hopes

Carlos Mendoza Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY Sports

To put it frankly, the Mets are a bit of a long shot to make the playoffs this year. It hasn’t quite worked out for the club as the franchise is in a bit of a rebuild. Additionally, they’re nine games back in the National League East and play in a division with the top ranked Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves.

The Mets have a ways to go if they want to get back in playoff contention but it’s not even summer yet. Considering there is under five months remaining in the regular season you can’t really rule any team out just yet. But New York is going to need to make a serious run.
