Top five bounce back players for the Mets

The Mets have a lot of questions marks coming into the 2012 season. If you look at their starting line-up, every player either had an injury riddled year and is a young talent trying to live up to what they did in 2011. There are some guys on the team who need to be their old selves if this team wants a chance to compete. I’m not counting players who were injured last year, just...

Mets Spring Notes: Gee Hopes To Avoid Fatigue and Pitch More Effectively In 2012

Mets starter Dillon Gee got off to a blazing 8-1 start in his rookie season, but by the time August rolled around he was mired in a big slide that lasted until the end of the season. After posting a remarkable 3.32 ERA in the first half, the young right-hander finished with a 5.91 ERA over his final 10 starts. According to an interview he did with the Daily News, Gee hopes that...

Ike Davis Is Pure Chaos At The Plate, Poetry In Motion On The Field

Terry Collins can’t seem to stop talking about Ike Davis. Everyday you read those quotes or hear him on SNY and he just raves about him endlessly. “I’ve only seen this guy for a little over a month and that was enough to convince me that, with 550 plate appearances, he can’t help but walk into 30-40 (home run) fastballs,” Collins was saying Tuesday. “Ike being back now...

Santana Upbeat After Tossing Two Innings Of Live Batting Practice

Johan Santana just completed throwing his first live batting practice session of the spring. Pitching coach Dan Warthen remarked “nice stuff” after Santana completed his first inning of live BP. Johan threw 22 pitches to Jason Bay, David Wright, Ike Davis and Vinny Rottino. In his second simulated inning, Santana tossed 21 more pitches (43 total) to Daniel Murphy (who made...

Mets prospect Havens sidelined by back soreness

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) -- New York Mets infield prospect Reese Havens has been sidelined by a sore back and probably won't participate in spring training until the weekend.

Mike Piazza inspires an opera

That is probably one of the last things would ever had expected when it comes to the best hitting catcher in baseball history. The former New York Mets catcher has inspired such songs as “Stepping Into the Batter’s Box, He Hears His Father’s Voice”, “Batting Practice” and “Postgame Interview.” Piazza was never directly spoken to by those who wrote the song cycle,...

Mets Spring Training Battle Positions Heading Into March (Are Not Really Battles)

On the eve of the first Intrasquad game of the season, heading into the 31 games in March, the Mets battles are starting to take shape. For the most part the Mets roster is set, with a group of players that positions to lose. Here’s the break down: Centerfield: Center is not so much a battle in spring as it will be later on in the season. Torres will have the position heading out...

Duda staying put in Mets' right-field spot

Despite his significant Minor League experience at the position, Lucas Duda will not serve as the Mets' backup first baseman -- even if regular first baseman Ike Davis is sidelined for a significant period of time.

Mixed Emotions On The Addition Of A Second Wild Card Spot

The announcement this afternoon the MLB has chosen to add a second Wild Card spot in each league means a lot of things. I suppose to a Mets fan it means that the team has a slightly larger chance of making it to the post-season for the first time since 2006, but there are much bigger consequences to be weighed.First allow me to explain how we got here. The final night if the 2011...

The Lineup Card: 14 Choices for 2012 Breakout Players by Baseball Prospectus

1. Jon Niese Now 25, Niese is nearing the age where he needs to make good on his promise, or otherwise be labeled a fourth starter for good. Niese, a big lefty with the stuff to pitch inside to righties and get ground balls, improved on his peripherals in 2011 but saw his earned run average worsen. Assuming Niese’s abdominal strain doesn’t become an issue again, this could...
