New York Mets pitcher Dillon Gee was released from the hospital on Monday following Friday shoulder surgery, and he said he can begin throwing in six weeks, ESPNNewYork.com reported.

Gee said he'll try to return to action this season, although he admits it's more likely to be next season.

But he also revealed details about his shoulder problem, which, he said, left him nearly without feeling in his right arm during his last start on July 8 and left him without a pulse in that arm the next day.

The surgery on Friday repaired a damaged artery in his pitching shoulder that had been 96 percent blocked. Doctors used a vein from Gee's groin to enlarge the artery.

"Right now I feel good," Gee said Tuesday, according to ESPNNewYork.com. "My arm feels good. All the symptoms are gone. So that's a positive. It's been a long week for me. This thing kind of came out of the blue and hit me really fast. To be honest with you, it was very scary at first, kind of tough to go through.

"Once we figured out it was going to be OK, my feelings went from being scared to being just disappointed really fast."

Doctors had dissolved a clot last week, and his life was never in danger, although if the issue had not been addressed, Gee could have sustained damage that might have ended his career.

Gee is 6-7 with a 4.10 ERA this season.
