Led by two outstanding pitching performances by R.A. Dickey and Jonathon Niese to kick off their series against the Phillies, the New York Mets are in position to do something they have not done in nearly six years; sweep the Phils in Philly.

Mike Pelfrey will go head to head with Cole Hamels at 1:35 p.m. in Citizens Bank Park.  Though both pitchers managed to rack up the K’s in their first outings of 2012, both will be hoping better results follow today.

What may not bode well for New York is Mike Pelfrey’s history of poor outings in Philly.

The 28-year-old righty has an earned run average approaching 10 (9.76) in his last 6 starts at Citizens Bank Park, where his division rivals have hit nearly .400 (.391) against him.  Ouch.  On the bright side, in his last outing in Philadelphia Big Pelf pulled out a win, going 6 innings and giving up just 3 earned runs while striking out two late last August.  It’s also safe to say Pelfrey won’t miss facing Ryan Howard or Chase Utley, as the two lefties have torched him throughout their careers, combining for 7 homers and 17 RBI in just 82 at-bats.  Their absence is sure to make Big Pelf smile, let’s just hope the results do the same for Mets fans.

Lucas Duda, who homered yesterday off Vance Worley, will get the day off against the left-handed Hamels as Terry Collins works to get Scott Hairston‘s bat in the line-up.

Hairston has owned Hamels throughout his career, belting three homers in only 20 at-bats while sporting a .400 average.  Today may also be the day Ike Davis breaks out of his early season slump as the Mets first basemen has three hits in just seven plate appearances against Hamels.
