Found April 03, 2012 on Mets Merized Online:
The New York Yankees come to Digital Domain Park in Port St. Lucie this afternoon for the first of two spring training games against the Mets. The second game is to be played at George Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. The Yankees have not played at the Mets’ spring training home since the spring of 1995. The teams last met for a spring game in Tampa on March 30, 1996 (the Mets won 5-2). Today’s game starts at 2:00 PM, while tomorrow’s Grapefruit League finale gets started 12:00 PM. Here are a couple of excerpts from two pretty good articles on the history of the Mets and Yankees rivalry and what those games meant to former team owner George Steinbrenner. The results of the games have long since been forgotten, but the men who played in them still remember what they meant to George Steinbrenner. To the late Yankees owner, spring training games against the Mets weren’t mere exhibitions. They were a proving ground, as Steinbrenner would remind players before the games—much to their amus...

How long until Jason Bay gets benched?

Well the first game of the season is tomorrow and the Mets have their Opening Day roster set. Mike Baxter and Miguel Batista have made the team and Andres Torres, Tim Byrdak, and Frank Francisco will be ready to go as well. All-in-all you look at this Spring as a Mets fan and things went pretty well. They didn’t win many games, but players coming off injuries in the previous...

Niese proposed contract extension due to analytic thinking

Well, this is refreshing compared to the Minaya era. It turns out some actual thought went into the negotiations with Jon Niese that appear to be headed to the lefty starter getting a five-year contract extension. Reports say that the proposed deal is somewhere around the $28 million range and may on top of that include options for 2017 and 2018. Based on ERA alone, this doesn...

Move down Bay before the opener

Jason Bay needs to start the season already OUT of the 5 hole. Bay has not driven in a single run this spring and no more time should be wasted seeing if this train wreck turns it around. He's had years. Like an old Mercury on a subzero morning there is no getting this piece of **** started. Break up the young lefty power duo of Ike & Duda with any other right handed bat...

Stinson and Rodriguez on waivers

Photo by Michael BaronThe Mets have placed Josh Stinson and Armando Rodriguez on outright waivers to make room for Miguel Batista and Mike Baxter. I think Arm-Rod is a safe bet despite his power arm potential at 24 y/o he's never been above class A, I don't see another team giving him someone else's roster spot. Stinson on the other hand despite his ugly 6.42 ERA in the...

The legend of Lucas Duda

There are some who say he was born of the Storm Giants who live in the clouds, and others who claim he was raised by bears in the Adirondacks, still more believe that he could fell a tree with one swing of his mighty club but Met fans know that he’s their best hope to survive this troubling 2012 season. When I look at Lucas Duda, I can’t help but think of the frontier legends...

Santana set to return as Mets open against Braves

Johan Santana and the Atlanta Braves have the same thing in mind heading into opening day. They'd both like to put last year behind them. After an extensive recovery from shoulder surgery, Santana is set to make his first major league start in 19 months Thursday when the New York Mets host a Braves team coming off a near-record collapse that cost them a playoff spot last September...

Pettitte faces three batters in Yankees return

Andy Pettitte made his first appearance in a New York Yankees uniform since retiring in 2010.  He entered the sixth inning of today's exhibition game against the New York Mets to a rousing standing ovation from the sold-out crowd at George H. Steinbrenner Stadium in Tampa. The lefthander looked a little grayer around the ears and a lot rustier everywhere else than the last...
