According to Jon Heyman of CBSsports.com, the New York Mets are “scouting” the relief market, and Jose Valverde, Francisco Rodriguez and Matt Capps could be among their options. Valverde went 3-4 with a 3.78 ERA, 3.62 FIP, 6.3 K/9, 3.5 BB/9, 0.4 HR/9 and 35 saves for the Tigers in 2012. The 34-year old right hander though, has been dropping his K/9 rate every year since 2006. His GB% this season (34.0%) was also a career low since 2006. Rodriguez, 30, just finished, probably, his worst season in the majors. He went 2-7 with a 4.38 ERA, 3.83 FIP, 9.0 K/9, 3.9 BB/9 and 1.0 HR/9 in 72.0 innings for the Brewers. His 9.0 K/9 represents a career worst, and the 1.0 HR/9 is his second worst since he reached the Majors. The upside for him is that his fastball averaged 91.8 MPH in 2012, the highest number since 2009 (92.7). Also, Rodriguez had a strong finish of the season limiting opposing hitters to a .165 wOBA, striking out 15 and walking just one for a 1.20 ERA in 15 innings in September and October. The 29-year old Capps went 1-4 with a 3.68 ERA, 4.49 FIP, 5.5 K/9, 1.2 BB/9 and 1.5 HR/9 in 29.1 innings for the Twins in 2012. Unlike Rodriguez, his average speed has been dropping since 2010 although he was an effective reliever against left handed hitters. Lefties hit .191 wOBA in 16.1 innings with one home run and 11 strike outs. Image by Keith Allison under the Creative Commons License Agreement.
