This afternoon in Jupiter, the New York Mets improved to 2-2 with a 7-0 win over the Miami Marlins.

Justin Turner led the way for NY going 3-for-3, with a homerun and 3 RBI.   Turner drove in a run in each of the first two innings and ignited the Mets three run fifth with a solo homerun; his first of the Spring. Following the game Turner — who is the primary back-up to Ike Davis — told reporters he is still adjusting to playing firstbase, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.

I’m real comfortable at second and third. I played a lot of short in my career. So I can play there. That’s what camp is for this year, I think — to get comfortable at first.”

Niese had excellent command-

Jon Niese started the game for the Mets and tossed two scoreless innings in his Grapefruit league debut.  The left hander threw 31 pitches (19 strikes)  while allowing one walk, no hits, and striking out two.  Following the game, Terry Collins said of Niese:

I thought his command was outstanding today. He kept the ball down. I’ve told you before: He’s got outstanding stuff. When he pounds that strike zone, he gets easy outs.”

Parnell lights out-

Bobby Parnell followed Niese with a perfect third inning, throwing seven of nine pitches for strikes. Parnell, who is fighting for one of the two final bullpen spots received  some praise from his manager following his outing this afternoon:

Bobby Parnell wants to make this team in the worst way. He had a couple of rough outings. He had a bad day on Sunday. … But one of the things I saw today was great command. He threw the ball to the outer half of the plate. He threw his breaking ball, which is much, much better — much improved. He threw the ball good.”

Mets offense-

  • Josh Thole and Mike Nickeas each collected two hits with a run batted in.
  • Matt den Dekker delivered an RBI double in the top of the second inning

Second lefty anyone-

  • Lefties Chuck James and Garret Olson combined to pitch 2 1/3 scoreless innings

With only one lefty (Tim Byrdak) a definite to make the roster out of camp the two lefties will be names that Mets fans should keep an eye on along with Daniel Herrera.

Back at it tomorrow-

The Mets will play host to the Miami Marlins tomorrow afternoon at 1:10 pm.
