Michael Fulmer will debut in St. Lucie this season after dominating in Savannah last year. I was recently flipping through Baseball America’s most recent issue on their 100 Top Prospects, and I came across something interesting in their organization reports about the New York Mets. In summary, they state that the Mets now believe they have “one of the most promising stables of right-handed power arms in the game.” This is some very optimistic, yet very bold thinking from the Mets. I like the message they are trying to put out to the fan base. It gives a reason for fans to be excited. But after digging a little deeper, it can also lead to some skepticism at the same time. We already know about the more prominent young power arms in the Mets system–Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler and Noah Syndegaard. However the rest of the names included by Baseball America which the Mets are boasting about are Rafael Montero, Michael Fulmer, Luis Mateo, Domingo Tapia and Corey Mazzoni. This is where we ca...

Zack Wheeler And The Brewing Of Excitement

The Mets’ first spring telecast from Port St. Lucie was this past Saturday (2/24). This was good news on several fronts. It pointed out that spring – the actual season, spring – is, indeed, on the way, that we here in the chilly Northeast will shortly be freed from this bleak midwinter. It evoked a coming time of short sleeves and short pants, those days of soda and pretzels...

Wheeler Scratched Due To Oblique Injury Suffered In Batting Practice

Andy Martino of the Daily News is hearing that Zack Wheeler will be scratched from his start today because of an oblique injury that happened while hitting in cage…. Wheeler has confirmed the injury and the Mets are calling it a mild strain… Darin Gorski will start today’s game instead of Wheeler today… This begs the question… We are using the DH in spring games, why was...

Mets man-crush: Rafael Montero

Zack Wheeler isn’t the only hot Mets pitching prospect worth watching in Spring Training this season. Rafael Montero has seemingly come out of nowhere and is making a name for himself in Mets camp. On Thursday night against the Nationals, Montero allowed one run in two innings in a modest spring debut. Those who watched him came away impressed with the 22-year-old’s arsenal....

ESPN New York: Wheeler Injury Not Very Bad

Terry Collins told ESPN New York this afternoon that the oblique injury to top prospect Zack Wheeler is “not very bad.” Adam Rubin also reports that “the hope is to get Wheeler back on a bullpen mound in five days”. As MMO’s John Delcos pointed out this morning, Wheeler sounds like he’ll miss just one more start before he appears in another Grapefruit League game. As...

Zack Wheeler And “The Zing”

Zack Wheeler‘s spring debut set the prospect world abuzz as the right-hander showed elite stuff in two scoreless innings of work. Having seen him pitch twice for the Augusta GreenJackets in 2010, Wheeler’s outing is an example of projection blooming into production. Reading through older reports while watching Hotel Transylvania left me looking for “The Zing”, or the moment...

Mets’ Zack Wheeler scratched with oblique strain

The New York Mets scratched right-hander Zack Wheeler from yesterday’s scheduled start because he strained his oblique while hitting in the cage, according to Andy Martino of The New York Daily News. Mets Scratch Zack Wheeler Due To A Mild Carlos Beltran Strain?

Andy Martino of the Daily News is hearing that Zack Wheeler will be scratched from his start today because of an oblique injury that happened while hitting in cage…. Rafael Montero makes Grapefruit League debut for Mets

New York Mets prospect Rafael Montero made his Grapefruit League debut Thursday afternoon against the Washington Nationals.  The 22-year-old right-hander, who recorded a 2.36 ERA while compiling 110 strikeouts vs. just 19 walks in 122 innings of A ball last year, gave up one run on three hits in two innings of work during his start against Washington. Stephen Strausburg may...

The Effects According To Keith

Zack Wheeler officially became a Met today ... he was scratched from his start due to injury. It was a mild oblique strain, and according to the broadcast, Wheeler doesn't think it's anything serious and that he'll make his next start. Of course, Ike Davis thought he was playing on May 11th, 2011. And Daniel Murphy is 7 to 10 days away from playing baseball, a revelation...

J.P. Arencibia is a decent human being, scored Opening Day tickets for fan with autism

Matt Harvey (pictured on the left with his father at Blue Jays spring training in 2011) by all accounts looks like your typical 31-year-old. The St. Catharines, Ontario man has a job he enjoys, a girlfriend he adores, an affinity for Twitter, and an almost unhealthy passion for baseball and the Toronto Blue Jays. He also has Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of autism. Harvey had a...

Mets Spring Training in 140 Characters

Ah yes, today’s stories can be summed up in 140 characters or less — if you live and work in the #Twitter universe. For New York Mets fans this means direct access to Ike Davis, Justin Turner, Zack Wheeler, Matt Harvey, Jordany Valdespin and even Mets GM Sandy Alderson … well, sometimes, Alderson posted a tweet in August, took a six-month hiatus, then posted another tweet...

Mets Spring Report: Marcum, Wheeler and Santana Still Out; Feliciano and Duda Back

Shaun Marcum out til mid-March while he works to strengthen weak shoulder. MURPHY UPDATE: Daniel Murphy, who has been down with a strained intercostal muscle in his right side and was reportedly a week to ten days away from playing in a game, is making progress. Adam Rubin of ESPN reports that Murphy began hitting off a tee today for the first time since suffering the injury and...

New York Mets Top 15 Prospects (2012-13)

The New York Mets’ top prospect list is a lot stronger now than it was when the off-season began, thanks to the R.A. Dickey trade with Toronto that brought two of the club’s Top 3 prospects into the system. The club lacks impact bats but it has a plethora of high-ceiling arms.   #1 Zack Wheeler (P) Age G GS IP H HR K/9 BB/9 ERA FIP 22 25 25 149.0 115 4 8.94 3.56 3.26...
