TEAMS: New York Mets
I've been spending a great deal of time in Lansing, Mich., lately covering activity in and around the state Capitol. You know the expression about laws and sausage-making. Well, I like to see the process. I've enjoyed my new assignment. One of the best parts of downtown Lansing is a magical place called The Peanut Store, located on Washington Square a block from the Capitol. The aroma wafts throughout the block. Inside, it's like a step back in time. There are Mr. Peanut souvenirs on the wall that I think have been for sale for decades. And right near the register is a drawer overing a tumbler keeping unsalted peanuts warm. I usually walk out with a massive, $5 bag of warm peanuts to bring back to the bureau or all the way back to colleagues in Grand Rapids. The bag gets lighter along the way, I must confess. But I get to be a hero. The shop sells other kinds of nuts, too. But I'm not going into a place called The Peanut Store to buy cashews or some candy.I don't need ...

Dark Clouds Shroud the Mets

Have you seen that drug commercial for those who suffer from depression? You know the one with the animated woman who has this little dark cloud that follows her everywhere? The Mets are that lady these days and there isn't a prescription big enough to handle the cloud the Mets are dealing with. Ever since the Wilpons became entangled in the fallout from Bernie Madoff, things...

A look at the roster: when contracts expire, years of Arby. and options

Last week I completed this post on the budget, basically were sitting at about $93M unless they take into consideration the entire 40 man roster. Here's a look at when this group will be leaving or at least need to be re-signed to be kept.  The Mets currently have 8 players who are under major league contract, who are out of options, the year next to their name indicates the...

In a post to SNY Why Guys, Mike Salfino examines players whose rookie seasons took place at age 25 and produced an OPS+ of 130 or more, and in regards to Lucas Duda, Salfino says: “Let’s just spitball this list and say there’s a 44% chance that Lucas Duda becomes a valuable asset for the next five years, a 25% chance he becomes a hitter comparable to at least Jason Bay and...

Mets To Rock Wayne’s World?

I caught this in the NY Post this morning: It’s doubtful Wayne Hagin will be back for a fifth year as Howie Rose’s partner in the Mets radio booth. Hagin’s contract has expired and WFAN has been interviewing possible replacements. Hagin previously called Rockies, Cardinals, Giants and A’s games. I never really took to Hagin… If they do replace him, I hope they give...

The Kid I Snuck Into the Party

So I’m walking across Mets Plaza in front of Citi Field the other day, quietest place you’d ever encounter late on a Tuesday morning in December. Nobody around for miles as far as I could tell. What a shame, I thought. I’m going to the holiday party the team holds for kids inside. To me it’s just another thing to cover. It should feel bigger, somehow. A Mets fan's view...

Mets still in contact with Jack Wilson

The Mets continue to have “regular contact” with free-agent SS Jack Wilson, according to a tweet from Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.
