PITTSBURGH -- Outfielders Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Mike Baxter entered the game in the eighth inning and made an immediate impact. Too bad for the New York Mets, it was a negative impact and helped Pittsburgh beat the Mets 5-4 on Monday. Nieuwenhuis, the center fielder, nearly collided with Baxter, the left fielder, while trying to catch Neil Walker's flyball to the gap in left-center leading off the eighth. The ball clanked off Nieuwenhuis' glove for a three-base error. Walker later scored the winning run on Clint Barmes' sacrifice fly. The Mets lost for the third time in their last four games and failed to win back-to-back games for the first time since May 8-9. The Pirates won for the second time in three games. "It's one of those things that happens sometimes," Mets manager Terry Collins said of the error. "You're out there and there's a lot of noise, Mike is calling for it, Kirk is calling for it, and they can't hear each other. ...

New York Mets Pitching Report

The Mets were not expected to be much of a factor in the NL East this season. Too many question marks. How were they going to replace Jose Reyes? How was Johan Santana going to perform after missing all of last year? Were they really going to rely on Frank Francisco to close games? But New York Mets has surprised many MLB odds makers by keeping its head above .500 almost all season...

Mets Recall Vinny Rottino, Is Manny Acosta On The Way Out?

According to Adam Rubin, a baseball says that the Mets are expected to re-call utility player Vinny Rottino ifrom Triple-A Buffalo and that he will rejoin the Mets in time for tonight’s game in Pittsburgh. Rottino is having a fine season in Buffalo batting 307/.361/.469 in 140 at-bats. He is second on the team with 25 RBI and has ten doubles, four home runs and five stolen...

Why The Ike Davis Decision Must Be Made By Thursday

As Chumbawamba once sang, "Ike gets knocked down, will he get up again?" It’s no secret that Ike Davis’ hold on the everyday first baseman’s job is in serious jeopardy.  In 141 at-bats this season, Davis is the owner of a .156 batting average and .212 on-base percentage.  That’s nowhere near the production expected of a starting first baseman.  In fact, it...

Tejada Batting and Running, Could Start Rehab Games This Week

According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, Terry Collins said Ruben Tejada batted in an extended Spring Training game in Port St. Lucie yesterday. Tejada did not play in the field and is trying to comeback from a strained right quadricep muscle he suffered while diving into first base in a game against the Diamondbacks on May 6. Last week, Collins told reporters Tejada had begun...

How long do you stick with Clint Barmes?

Through 40 games, Clint Barmes is hitting .171/.200/.285. Last night, he drew a walk and doubled his season walk total. It's true that he was mostly signed to play defense, but it's hard to say that his defense has been anything better than about average at shortstop this year. Still, he's started more games than any Pirate other than Neil Walker this year. So how long...

Pirates 5, Mets 4

“Adding some bats” easier said than done

Dejan Kovacevic has an article in Monday’s Tribune-Review criticizing the Pirates’ front office for not taking action to address the club’s offensive struggles. It is a well-written article and offers up a lot of valid points. The Pirates offense has been awful and, with ‘Cutch out of the equation, is hitting .203/.253/.321. Those are the facts, plain and simple. Whose fault...

Miscues and more whiffs

The Pirates’ hitters and defense let them down on Tuesday night, as they wasted yet another strong starting pitching effort and lost to the Mets 3-2. James McDonald was fantastic, again. It’s clear at this point that he is the Pirates’ ace, as he dominated the Mets for much of the night. After striking out the side in the first, J-Mac allowed a run in the second on two walks...

Betting on the Mets

Record 18-22 Bank Account -270 Mets at Pirates - I feel as though many pitchers I typically bet against are on the hill today which includes Charlie Morton, Kevin Millwood, Bronson Arroyo, etc. What can I say about the Pirates that hasn't been said? They simply have the worst offense in baseball, but Andrew McCutchen is very hot right now. The Pirates have scored two or less...
