Found November 05, 2013 on Mets Merized Online:
According to Jorge Castillo of the Star-Ledger, the Mets have contacted free agent shortstop Rafael Furcal. Furcal, 36, missed the entire 2013 season with St. Louis after undergoing Tommy John surgery in March. The former National League Rookie of the Year in 2000, signed a two-year, $14 million contract with the Cardinals before the 2012 season. The three time All Star played in 121 games with the Cardinals in 2012 and batted .261/.325/.346 with 18 doubles, five home runs and 49 RBI in 531 plate appearances. He has missed over 500 games to the disabled list since the 2008 season. While he could provide an upgrade over Omar Quintanilla or Ruben Tejada, I’m not so sure it would be that much of an upgrade. However this would validate my speculation that the Mets would not pursue any top tier free agents this offseason. Obviously this is a far cry from Jhonny Peralta and Stephen Drew.

Rafael Furcal and the Free Agent Market

The Mets have reached out to Rafael Furcal, according to multiple reports. Let’s put that on the list of things I’d never thought I would write. But, there is something of note to take out of this. This doesn’t mean that Rafael Furcal is the top priority for the Mets or that he’s their only target, as some in the social media world have alluded to. Sandy Alderson is evaluating...

Eric Young Jr. Is Not A Good Reason To Trade Daniel Murphy

In recent days, rumors have heated up that the Mets are considering trading Daniel Murphy so they can install Eric Young Jr. as their everyday second baseman. As I see it, there are two significant problems with this idea. The first is that Daniel Murphy is one of the few things about the Mets that isn’t completely broken, and getting rid of him would add another entry to the list...

Here are nine potential shortstops Cards could pursue to replace Kozma

ST. LOUIS -- The Cardinals haven't changed the way they look at the shortstop position. They still consider defense the priority at the position. Still, they'd like a little bit of offense. Pete Kozma didn't even give them that over the last four months of the regular season and the playoffs. After a solid April and May, Kozma declined into one of baseball's least...

Mets targeting SS Rafael Furcal

The New York Mets are setting their sights on free agent shortstop Rafael Furcal. Furcal, 36, missed the 2013 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery but is high on Mets general manager Sandy Alderson’s wish list reports the Newark Star Ledger. The Mets are ready to move on past Ruben Tejada and appear ready to make a move that will ensure that he is not the teams starter come Opening Day.

Too much pitching? Yeah, kinda -- so who figures to be in Cards' 2014 rotation?

ST. LOUIS -- Whoever said a team never can have too much pitching was not thinking about the Cardinals in 2014. While many clubs have trouble putting together one solid rotation, the Cardinals feature enough depth to field two five-man rotations, and the second one would not be an embarrassment. Think about it: Adam Wainwright, Michael Wacha, Shelby Miller, Joe Kelly and Lance...

Mets Matters: Bronson Arroyo Would Consider Mets; Agreement With WOR-710 Official

Call it a message to the New York Mets. Terry Bross, the agent for Cincinnati free agent Bronson Arroyo said his client would be interested in talking to the Mets. “Bronson is an East Coast guy and would definitely consider the Mets,’’ Terry Bross told the New York Post. “But we’re going to take our time with this.’’ Reading between the scant lines, nowhere can it be...

ESPN’s Keith Law released his Top 50 Free Agents for this offseason on Tuesday. Red Sox show respect for Cardinals with full-page ad

ST. LOUIS -- Classy move, Red Sox. Truly classy. Less than a week after ending the St. Louis Cardinals' pursuit of a 12th world championship, the Boston Red Sox gave a tip of their caps to their vanquished foe. The Red Sox took out a full-page ad in Tuesday's St. Louis Post-Dispatch to acknowledge their respect for the Cardinals. In a three-paragraph letter headlined "...

Mets Don’t Love Mark Trumbo

I don’t know about most of you, but a few of us on MMO let out a collective sigh of relief when we read the following from Andy Martino of the Daily News: The Mets don’t love Mark Trumbo and they’ve never shown any interest in Peter Bourjos. I see Trumbo as an Ike Davis with more consistent power, but a worse glove. I couldn’t imagine giving up a Jon Niese for someone like...

Phillies Could Have An Advantage Should They Want To Pursue Carlos Beltran

The Phillies received some good news yesterday - provided they are interested in free agent outfielder Carlos Beltran. Yesterday, the Cardinals extended to Beltran a qualifying offer. That means that whatever team signs Beltran will have to forfeit a first round draft pick. That is, unless you were one of...

Today, I’d like to take a look at the top two free agents at the shortstop position, a position at which the Mets need dire and immediate improvement. The 2013 season saw a major decline at SS for the Mets. After playing in 114 games in 2012 and posting...
