PLAYERS: Shaun Marcum
TEAMS: New York Mets
Last night, Shaun Marcum hopped on a plane to St. Louis looking for answers.  Today, he hopes to have those answers.  He will see a specialist to help him identify what is causing the numbness and coldness in his pitching hand.  It's a similar issue that Josh Beckett experience, and it's even more similar to Marcum's teammate Dillon Gee. Adam Rubin of ESPN New York points out the specialist Marcum will be seeing is the very same one that evaluated Gee.  Gee was eventually diagnosed with a blood clot.  Clots are potentially fatal, but if caught early, surgery can help.  In Gee's case, he required season-ending surgery to correct the problem. Marcum has not been placed on the DL, but this trip to St. Louis is an ominous sign.  He has pitched through the issue, but he has not pitched well.  So far this season, Marcum is 1-10 with a 5.91 ERA.  That's a far cry from what he's proven himself able to do.  It is very likely that the numbness has been going on for some time now and affecting his pitching for most of the season. Marcum, 31, is an eight-year veteran of the Major Leagues.  He has pitched for the Blue Jays, the Brewers, and now the Mets.  In his career, he is 58-46 with a 3.88 ERA.  The Mets were hoping he'd match his career numbers more closely when they signed him.
