A Thousand Words Tangientally Related To Brian Bixler

If the title of this blog post hasn't scared you off yet, then obviously you have some morbid curiosity regarding how anybody who is not in Brian Bixler's immediate family can write a thousand words on Brian Bixler. And not just how ... but why. Why? Simple answer: This is the Mets' version of "hot stove season". Writing a post about Brian Bixler, who was signed...

Mets may be close on offer to Dickey

The New York Mets could be on the verge of a breakthrough in their negotiations with National League Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey. Or, maybe not. The Mets plan to offer Dickey a two-year contract extension, according to major league sources. Whether Dickey would accept such a deal remains to be seen. Dickey, 38, is under contract next season for $5 million. He likely would...

Subway Squawkers interview with R.A. Dickey, Mets Cy Young Award winner

I was very excited to have the opportunity to speak with 2012 NL Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey earlier today. Dickey is one of the stars of "Knuckleball!," which is now available through video on demand. The DVD is available for pre-order at knuckleballmovie.com. Squawker Lisa and I were able to see the movie last spring at the Tribeca Film Festival and we highly recommend...

Mets Wouldn’t Trade Jon Niese For Alex Gordon?

John Harper of the Daily News asked a Mets source if Jon Niese would be enough to land Royals Gold Glove left fielder Alex Gordon. I was stunned to see the response he got. But would they [the Mets] be better off trading Jonathon Niese than Dickey? As a 26-year-old lefthander who is under team control at $5 million-a-year for six more seasons, including two option years, Niese may...

An Argument to Extend R.A. Dickey

Much of the talk around the Mets fan base in the wake of R.A. Dickey’s Cy Young win this week has been about his value and whether it would be best for the Mets to give Dickey a contract extension or trade him at what appears to be the peak of his value. I’ve found myself on both ends of this discussion over the last few weeks. There was a time two weeks ago that I had pretty...

MMO Prospect Pulse: RHP Erik Goeddel

Would you believe there is a 24th round pick in the Mets organization that you should care about? Believe it. Meet Erik Goeddel. At 6’3” and 185 lbs, Erik Goeddel was drafted in the 24th round of the 2010 MLB draft, and the Mets paid over-slot for this kid by far. He ended up getting paid $350,000 – more than anyone received in that round. In fact, Goeddel received double what...

2013 Astros Projections: Norris, Harrell, Lyles

Fantasy owners won't be looking at any of these pitchers early in 2013 drafts, but is there any hidden value here, or is staying away the best decision?   Bud Norris - SP - HOU 2013 Age: 28 2013 Projection: 189 IP, 8 W, 4.09 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 183 K, 72 BB Notes: Huge potential due to consistently high strikeout rate, but needs better command and...

Report: Mets offer Dickey two-year deal

The New York Mets have reportedly offered NL Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey a two-year contract extension. Fox Sports reported Saturday morning that the Mets planned to make an offer but the New York Daily News later reported that the club already made the offer. It is not clear how much money is involved, but the Daily News reported that Dickey, 38, would sign a contract comparable...

Reports From Instructs: Houston Astros (Pt 2)

Carlos Correa was the recent first overall pick and while I didn’t see him as an amateur, he showed big time tools in the GCL and again in instructs. His projectable 6’4, 190 pound frame immediately stands out with broad shoulders, tapered torso and long limbs. Correa is an outstanding athlete to coordinate his body to play shortstop, which he does well now with a plus arm, solid...

Rosenthal: Mets could be on verge of a breakthrough in negotiations with Dickey

Yesterda, Newsday reporter Marc Craig tweeted that New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson “doesn’t think Dickey winning the Cy Young will significantly impact talks.”  Ken Rosenthal’s article today for Fox Sports certainly seems to echo that sentiment as the team is reportedly preparing to offer Dickey a 2-year-extension: The New York Mets could be on the verge of...

This Is Too Funny… Mets On Verge Of Dickey Deal, Or Maybe Not

Major League sources tell Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports that the Mets plan to offer R.A. Dickey a two-year contract extension… I think… The New York Mets could be on the verge of a breakthrough in their negotiations with National League Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey. Or, maybe not. The Mets plan to offer Dickey a two-year contract extension, according to major league sources...

Do The Mets Have What It Takes To Get Justin Upton?

How would Upton look as a Met? In the wake of Tuesday’s blockbuster deal between the Miami Marlins and Toronto Blue Jays, I think it is only fair that the Mets make a blockbuster trade of their own. Justin Upton is still available, and despite the lack of rumors linking the Mets and D’backs in trade discussions, my hope is that GM Sandy Alderson has at least inquired about...

Jason Bay on the market, teams watching

Free Agency Released by the NY Mets, where will Jason Bay play next season? With the New York Mets front office coming to terms with Jason Bay last week as to a buyout that will pay Bay the guaranteed remainder of his $66 million contract ($21 million this year), Bay must now find himself a new zip code, or even a postal code for that matter, if he wants to play next season. Not...

Sandy Alderson And His Legacy Of Diminished Expectations

Who can forget where we were and what we were doing on December 16, 2004? (Ok, I admit it. I didn’t know the exact date either). It was a huge day for us fans. After finishing 25 GB and under .500 for the 3rd straight year, Omar Minaya made not only a bold move but made a statement. The New York Mets—yes, OUR New York Mets—signed the top pitcher of his era: Pedro Martinez....

Cy Young surprise

Sure, OK, David Price wins the American League Cy Young Award. Not entirely surprising.   But R.A. Dickey in the National League? Don’t get me wrong, he put up some great numbers and was absolutely deserving of the honor. But raise your hand if you had Dickey winning the award before the season started.   [...]
