The Mets just announced they have signed OF Marlon Byrd to a Minor League contract with an invite to Spring Training. Byrd, 35, was suspended for 50 games in June after testing positive for performance enhancing drugs last season. “I made an inexcusable mistake,” Byrd said in a statement . “Several years ago, I had surgery for a condition that was private and unrelated to baseball. Last winter, I suffered a recurrence of that condition and I was provided with a medication that resulted in my positive test. Although that medication is on the banned list, I absolutely did not use it for performance-enhancement reasons.” “I am mortified by my carelessness and I apologize to everyone who loves this game as I do. I will serve my suspension, continue to work hard and hope that I am given an opportunity to help a club win later this season.” Byrd batted .210/.243/.245 with two doubles, one home run and nine RBI in 47 games with the Cubs and Red Sox. He is a career .278 hitter with 82 homer...

Mets add depth to pen with LaTroy Hawkins, Scott Atchinson

While a sizable amount of press has been devoted to the possible acquisitions of Michael Bourn or Brian Wilson, Sandy Alderson has methodically been adding pitchers to the organization’s choices for the 2013 iteration of the Mets bullpen staff. One such signing is the January 31st signing of LaTroy Hawkins. Hawkins, age 40, is an 18 year veteran of the major leagues and now...

Mets not comfortable with Francisco, interested in Valverdi, have an offer out to a non-closer type

So far during his tenure as the New York Mets general manager, Sandy Alderson has signed only one player to a multi-year deal, closer Frank Francisco. During his first year of a two-year deal, Francisco dealt with elbow issues in September that eventually required surgery (in December) to remove a bone spur from his pitching elbow. The good news he should be fine for the start of...

The New York Mets are so unsatisfied with their current closer situation that the team is pursuing free agent Jose Valverde to likely unseat Frank Francisco, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York. Alderson is pursuing Jose Valverde to compete with -- or more likely unseat -- Francisco as closer, a baseball source told ESPNNewYork.com. If the Mets were to...

It was announced yesterday that the Mets signed 40-year old LaTroy Hawkins to a minor league deal with an invitation to major league Spring Training. He joins a plethora of veteran relievers to receive the same deal including Tim Byrdak, Aaron Laffey, Pedro Feliciano and most recently Scott Atchison. In recent years, the Amazin’s have tried to fill the gaping hole in the bullpen...

Report: Jason Varitek Not a Likely Candidate to Replace Gary Tuck as Red Sox’ Bullpen Coach

When well-respected bullpen coach Gary Tuck decided to suddenly retire earlier this week, Jason Varitek seemed like a logical fit. It appears Varitek will remain in his current role as special assistant to general manager Ben Cherington, though. According to WEEI.com’s Alex Speier, it does not appear that Varitek is being considered, or even wants to be considered, for the position...

Jason Varitek Would Be a Great Replacement for Gary Tuck If He Decided to Dive Into World of Coaching

Gary Tuck earned what so many seek to earn throughout their coaching careers: respect. So while replacing a bullpen coach hardly leads to the fanfare of signing a free agent or executing a trade, the Red Sox need to choose wisely in replacing Tuck. Immediately, the name that comes to mind is Jason Varitek. The former Red Sox captain rejoined the organization in September as a special...

MMO Featured Post: The Myth Of A Bountiful Inheritance

While I´m quite tired of the “Omar vs. Sandy” debate, a recent post about the “strong farm system” Omar Minaya supposedly left behind in late 2010, got me thinking and looking. To summarize, as of today, it doesn´t look as if the farm system left behind was all that good. And one  big reason for the Mets´ recent and even current struggles is directly related to the lack...

WEEI: Sox sign Lyle Overbay to a minor-league deal

The Red Sox may have filled the most obvious hole on their roster today by agreeing to a minor-league deal with Lyle Overbay, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI. I was all ready to line up joke after joke about Overbay being old (36) and always hurt, but really on a minor-league deal this is a solid move. He's a patient hitter (career OBP .353 vs. AVG of .270) with plenty of...
