Mike Francesa said on WFAN today that a team source told him the Mets we’re still in on Jose Reyes.
“We’re sitting back,” the source said. “We’re not gonna bid against ourselves. We’ll be there to take a shot at him at the end.”
Matthew Cerrone: The best I can gather, the only hard offer Jose has in hand is from the Marlins. And so, I’m guessing that his people must be working to wrangle other teams (like the Brewers specifically) or the Mets) to make a counter proposal… and that is why things have been quiet. So, perhaps the Mets feel comfortable they can compete with Miami’s pitch and so they’re waiting for Jose to come to them? I don’t know. I wish I knew more, to better judge this process, but I’m just not sure – as of now – there is a whole lot to know or judge.
