N.Y. Post: Charles Wenzelberg

With MLB rosters expanding to 40 players and the Buffalo Bisons season ending on Monday afternoon, the New York Mets announced  their intention to add Jenrry Mejia, Jeurys Familia, Elvin Ramirez, Justin Hampson, Fred Lewis and Jordany Valdespin to the clubs roster prior to today’s game in St. Louis, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.  In a post to his blog, Rubin writes:

“With Matt Harvey capped at two to three more starts because of an innings limit, Mejia should see time in the rotation down the stretch.  Lewis, 31, is hitting .294 with 13 homers, 45 RBIs and 25 steals in 108 games with Buffalo. He played parts of six major league seasons with the San Francisco Giants, Toronto Blue Jays and Cincinnati Reds.  The Mets already had added corner infielder Zach Lutz, catcher Mike Nickeas and Collin McHugh.

The group bypassed for a promotion included Zack Wheeler, 39-year-old left-hander C.J. Nitkowski, outfielder/third baseman Matt Tuiasosopo and center fielder Matt den Dekker. “

As Rubin points out, the Mets did not promote anyone directly from Binghamton, saying  “Wilmer Flores, already on the 40-man roster, would have been the primary consideration.”

I would have loved to see Flores and Wheeler on the clubs roster during the seasons final month.  While I admit to being a bit upset that neither is getting the nod (though I understand why), I am very excited to see both Mejia (again) and Familia. Even though it will be a small sample size, I am still interested  to see how they will be used, how much they can contribute, and if they can prove they belong. It has been a tough second half for us Mets fans, but maybe the addition of possible long term contributors can give us a little excitement for the final stretch of the 2012 season.
