The Mets want to emulate the defending World Champion San Francisco Giants? It may sound like another punchline to a bad Sandy Alderson joke, but it’s not. One of my favorite New York sports columnists is Kevin Kernan of the NY Post. I think he gives us a glimpse of what the Mets might be trying to do here: The Mets were 22nd in the majors in home runs with 139. Only five National League teams hit fewer home runs, but the team that finished dead last in the majors, the Giants (103), won the World Series. The Mets’ plan is to emulate the Giants by playing sound baseball in a large ballpark and getting tremendous pitching to carry them through. Home run hitters also cost big money and the Mets are not spending big money. I agree with Kevin, and that probably sizes up what the Mets might be attempting to do, but so are a dozen other team, and when you’re banking everything on pitching prospects it’s always a huge gamble. There are no guarantees. But if this was really about the...

Getting to know Collin McHugh, rotational darkhorse

Every day the Mets move closer to starting the 2013 with only four rotational givens: Santana, Niese, Harvey and Gee.  That leaves Mejia, Familia, Schwinden, Hefner and a certain fella named McHugh.  You might be asking, “McWho?” but by the end of Spring Training I would hardly be surprised if Collin McHugh were to be anointed as the 5th starter in the rotation. The reason...

MMO Featured Post: Why You Should Watch The Mets This Season

With less than thirty days before pitchers and catchers report to Port St. Lucie for Spring Training there is little excitement for the upcoming season.  Bad baseball may be better than no baseball, but 2013 appears to be another year of tempered expectations for most Mets fans.  As a result, ticket sales and television ratings will likely take yet another hit, but should they...

What Spring Training Battles Will We See In Mets Camp?

Pitchers and Catchers report in 22 days. Only three more weeks until until all of our players proclaim they are in the best shapes of their life. What do you think will be some of the more interesting battles in Mets camp this spring? XtreemIcon – If the current roster goes to Spring Training, I’d say the 5th starter job, though the Mets keep saying they’ll bring someone in...

New York Mets and Bobby Parnell agree to one-year deal

Thursday evening, the New York Mets and right-handed reliever Bobby Parnell avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year deal worth $1.7 million for 2013. #bbpBox_292072002926280704 a { text-decoration:none; color:#0084B4; }#bbpBox_292072002926280704 a:hover { text-decoration:underline; } The Mets and Bobby Parnell have avoided arbitration and agreed to a 1 year 1.7 million dollar...

In a weekend dominated by playoff football, Mets avoid arbitration with Ike Davis

It’s another weekend where most sports fans will have their eyes on the NFL Conference Championship games, but for the Mets faithful, besides enjoying some Free NFL Playoff Picks, there was good news regarding first basemen Ike Davis (who was also apparently enjoying the NFL playoffs). #bbpBox_293097489165328384 a { text-decoration:none; color:#0084B4; }#bbpBox_293097489165328384...

Mets, Davis agree to one-year contract

The New York Mets and first baseman Ike Davis avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract worth $3.125 million, ESPN New York reported Saturday. Davis requested $3.7 million and was offered $2.825 million from the Mets when the two sides exchanged arbitration figures on Friday. Davis, 25, hit 32 home runs and drove in 90 runs last season after a bad start. He missed...

Mets Have $95M Payroll And Only $5 Million To Spend? Not Exactly…

Just caught a glimpse of this on MetsBlog: So, as we’ve been discussing all winter, the Mets payroll is around the same number as it was last year, but without adding new talent to the roster (and reducing their payroll commitments by parting ways with Jon Rauch, Mike Pelfrey, Andres Torres and Ramon Ramirez). Now, Sandy Alderson has indicated he would be able to expand the budget...

SF Giants Rumors: Arbitration Players, Brian Wilson, Congratulations 49ers

Let’s get everyone all caught up to speed with the San Francisco Giants and their arbitration eligible players. On Friday, the Giants hammered out deals with four of their six arbitration eligible players. The following four players have agreed to terms and avoid arbitration are catcher Buster Posey ($8 million), outfielder Hunter Pence ($13.8 million), reliever Jose Mijares (...

Why aren't the Mets grabbing some of these MiLB

I've said all along I don't expect the Mets to be involved in the big name free agents like Michael Bourn and I don't really blame them for that, Bourn at this point a move like that really makes very little sense. The Mets are rebuilding, spending on a big piece really isn't making them a contender this year and wont be around long enough to be part of the winning...

Mets bring back Feliciano, settle with Ike Davis

Left-hander Pedro Feliciano is returning to the New York Mets, who also settled their salary arbitration case with first baseman Ike Davis. The Mets said Monday that Feliciano had agreed to a minor league contract after two injury-plagued seasons across town with the Yankees. The 36-year-old left-hander never pitched in a game for the Yankees, spending two years of the disabled...

Mets Re-Sign Pedro Feliciano To Minors Deal

The New York Mets announced this morning that they have signed former Met Pedro Feliciano to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training. Here on MMO last week, we brought up the idea of the Mets bringing back Feliciano. The 36-year old Feliciano led the majors in games pitched from 2008-2010 making 266 appearances all as a Met. He has held lefties to a career...

GM Sabean: Wilson unlikely to be back with Giants

San Francisco Giants general manager Brian Sabean said Saturday that closer Brian Wilson will unlikely return to the team this year. The New York Mets are reportedly heavily pursuing Wilson. "I'm going to be brutally honest as I always am, I don't (think Wilson will return)," Sabean said in the New York Post while attending an event in New York. "In this...

Mets Could Be In On Michael Bourn If Price Comes Down

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe says this morning that “the Mets are not out of the picture if the price and length of commitment come down” on free agent outfielder Michael Bourn. As you can read below, I don’t see Bourn and the Mets as a match for the reasons I specified, chief among them being that it would cost the Mets their first round pick. Original Post 1/15 I don’t...
