Justin Ruggiano’s solo home run in the second inning on Thursday gave the Miami Marlins their first run of the 2013 season but that was all they were able to compile in a 6-1 loss to the Washington Nationals.   The loss completed a three game sweep in the first series of the year.   Once again, Miami received a decent start from their starting pitcher as Wade LeBlanc kept the team in the game before the bullpen let it get away. LeBlanc allowed three runs on five hits in his five innings of work but only two of those runs were earned.   The left-hander struck out five and walked two while falling to 0-1 on the season.  The other three runs came on a Jayson Werth home run in the seventh inning off of Mike Dunn.  In the eighth, Steve Cishek made his season debut striking out two in a perfect inning. Ruggiano’s blast was a welcome sign for the Marlins who had gone nineteen innings to start the year without a run.  Had Miami been shut out, it would have been the first time in Major League history that a team was shut out through it’s first three games.   The Marlins did manage eight hits but the rest were all singles as the team was unable to mount much of a rally or comeback attempt. The Marlins will try to get their first win of the year on Friday in New York against the Mets.   The scheduled starter for Miami is Alex Sanabia.
