The Miami Marlins are talking about playing for pride. While the Milwaukee Brewers are three games under .500, they still harbor playoff hopes, no matter the long odds. Mike Fiers takes the mound looking to continue his impressive season when the Brewers open a four-game road series against the Marlins on Monday. Milwaukee has put together its best run of the season over the last two weeks, winning 11 of 13. The Brewers (65-68) completed a three-game sweep of Pittsburgh with a 12-8 win Sunday. They hit five homers, including Ryan Braun's NL-leading 37th, and reached double digits in runs for the third time in seven games. Braun is hitting .353 with four homers and 12 RBIs in the last 13 games while helping the Brewers pull within 6 12 games of the second wild-card spot. "You never know what can happen," Braun said. "You just continue to compete every day. Obviously we'd have to play great baseball for the rest of the year but by no means are we giving up....

Brewers believing that they are still in the race

MILWAUKEE The Milwaukee Brewers were out of it. Finished. Kaput. At least, that was the narrative a few weeks ago before the Brewers won 11 of 13 and pulled within 6.5 games of the wildcard. Now, the change in the clubhouse is tangible. And Brewers manager Ron Roenicke admitted that he's glanced at the standings more in the last few days than he had in the months before, when...

Looking at Brewers September Callups

Photo: Mike Strasinger/Nashville SoundsWith the minor-league season largely done, the Brewers added a few players to their roster this morning. Pitchers Wily Peralta and Tyler Thornburg, as well as outfielder Logan Schafer, were recalled from AAA Nashville, while right-hander Josh Stinson was purchased from AA Huntsville. The call-ups pushed the Brewers’ active roster to 30...

Marlins to use 6-man rotation rest of season

MIAMI (AP) -- The Miami Marlins plan to use a six-man rotation for the rest of the season, manager Ozzie Guillen says. Left-hander Wade LeBlanc will start Tuesday night against Milwaukee, pushing righty Jacob Turner back a day in a rotation that also includes Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle, Ricky Nolasco and Nathan Eovaldi. Guillen said the move is to keep Turner from throwing too...

Reyes, Nolasco command Marlins past Brewers

MIAMI (AP) -- Jose Reyes drove in three runs and the Miami Marlins snapped a four-game losing streak with a 7-3 victory against the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday. Ricky Nolasco (11-12) gave up three runs, though only one was earned, and nine hits in seven innings. He was coming off his third career shutout, against Washington. Cishek save bid goes awry, Mets rally to beat Marlins 5-3

MIAMI – The way Marlins pitcher Josh Johnson was throwing for eight innings, Mets backup catcher Kelly Shoppach didn’t think his team had “much of a chance.” But the Mets erupted for four runs in the ninth to earn a 5-3 win over Miami before 26,402 fans at Marlins Park. Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen took Johnson out after eight innings and 105 pitches, inserting normally...

Estrada spurs eye-opening, pitching-duel win

The Pittsburgh Pirates are feeling playoff pressure. The Milwaukee Brewers, conversely, are playing free and loose these days, unburdened by any remaining expectations. Yet, undeniably, the Brewers showed some encouraging signs during Saturday's air-tight, 3-2 victory. Milwaukee's Corey Hart provided the obvious jolt of adrenaline, hammering a solo, walk-off homer off Pittsburgh...

Mets Should Take Notice Of Marlins Heading Into Offseason

Alderson’s Third Offseason: It’s Time To Put Up Or… For those of you who think stocking up on big ticket free agents should be cognizant of what happened in Miami if they believe that is the way to go in building a team. A look at the Red Sox would do them good, too. It’s not about spending the money, but spending it wisely. The Marlins, who went crazy with Mark Buehrle and...

Brewers bash Bucs again

The Pirates were swept out of Milwaukee on Sunday, as a good day at the plate wasn’t enough to overcome another awful start by James McDonald.  J-Mac continues to drive Pirate fans nuts. He looked SO good in those two games against the Cardinals these last two weeks, but this time came right out and walked the leadoff man on four pitches. Uh oh. Then Pedro Alvarez made an error...

Burnett’s stellar start spoiled, hearts broken in Milwaukee

The Pirates tied the game in the 8th inning and headed to the 9th tied at 2.  John Axford got Pedro Alvarez and Josh Harrison to ground out to start, but Rod Barajas decided it wouldn’t end there.  He singled to center field, and Axford’s lack of command walked pinch hitters Michael McKenry and Gaby [...]

There Were Aberrations

Baseball teams have "bad" season's because of many reasons. The team has terrible pitching. Their hitting, or fielding sucks. The managers a total jerk, and in the Boston Red Sox case this season, players just refuse to perform for a manager they don't care for. Miami Marlin owner Jeffrey Loria, on Friday when the team took their "official...
