The Miami Marlins are widely regarded as having one of baseball’s worst farm systems, but it’s not devoid of premium talent. Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus released his top 101 prospects Monday and included Marlins outfielder Christian Yelich (33) and right-hander Jose Fernandez (80). Yelich is bound for Jupiter in the advanced-A Florida State League this season and Fernandez, who the Marlins selected with their first round pick last June, will start at low-A Greensboro. We spoke to Goldstein earlier this offseason when he released his Marlins’ prospect list. For those of you who missed it, here’s what he had to say about the aforementioned duo: On Yelich: “He’s surprised everybody. It’s always nice when you take a first-round pick, you get him in instructs, let him play a year and realize he’s actually better than you thought he was when you took him and gave him a seven-figure bonus. The fact he played a lot of first base in high school kept people from seeing that athleti...

MLB Opinion: Yoenis Cespedes Can Be an Impact Player in the Bigs

The latest rumor in the Yoenis Cespedes sweepstakes has the Miami Marlins offering less than $40 million for the Cuban defector. While Cespedes has yet to negotiate with any other teams, a $40 million price tag seems reasonable for 6 years for the 26 year old. Cespedes can not sign a contract until he is unblocked by OFAC (Office of Foreign Asset Control) and the list of additional...

Going into this offseason, even before the Marlins showed how they were going to spend money, it just felt that Cespedes would be a good fit for the Marlins. He is a young, talented OF who would join Stanton and play in a market that would go crazy for Yoenis. He would create new sources...
