The Miami Marlins moved into a tie with the Washngton Nationals atop the National League East on Sunday after beating the Philadelphia Phillies 5-1.     The Marlins are now eight games over .500 for the first time on the year and have extended their unbeaten streak in series to eleven.    The win came on the same day Giancarlo Stanton was named NL Player of the Month for his exceptional May.

Carlos Zambrano helped the Marlins on the mound and at the plate winning the game while homering for the first time this season.   Zambrano tossed seven and two third innings of one run ball, striking out seven along the way.    The win was Zambrano’s fourth of the season and continued a trend of great control for a pitcher who had command issues in recent years.  The veteran struck out seven while walking two and allowing four hits — three of which were off the bat of former Marlin, Juan Pierre.   Steve Cishek was called upon to finish the eighth inning and then begin the ninth inning before giving way to Heath Bell.   The Marlins’ closer retired the only two batters he faced to earn his twelfth save of the year.

Zambrano’s blast came in the third inning off Phillies’ starter Joe Blanton.   With the home run, Zambrano has now hit at least one longball in each of the past eleven seasons.  For good measure, the veteran added an infield hit on a sacrifice bunt attempt later in the game.     Hanley Ramirez also homered, it was his third in two days and eleventh of the season.   Four Marlins’ had two hit days including Zambrano.  The others were Jose Reyes, Greg Dobbs and Chris Coghlan.

The Marlins are off on Monday before starting a series against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday.  The scheduled starters are Tim Hudson and Anibal Sanchez.
