Michael Grove Reacts to Joining Dodgers Roster After Losing Rotation Battle

Michael Grove makes his season debut tonight at Dodger Stadium against the Rockies. For the rookie right-hander, it's an exciting opportunity that he wasn't expecting to get. 

When All-Star starter Tony Gonsolin injured his ankle during spring training, Grove was announced as the frontrunner along with Ryan Pepiot to fill in for a few starts to open the season. Days before opening day, Dave Roberts gave the job to Pepiot, stating that he outperformed his competition. A few days later, Grove was called upon to take the role.

As J.P. Hoornstra of the OC Register reports, the last minute change was a little strange for Grove.

“I guess it was a little awkward. That’s the nature of the business ― just have to be ready when my name’s called, whenever that may be. This time it was before the season started. I’m just trying to be ready mentally and physically.”

Grove will need to be ready to face Colorado tonight. He made his final start last season against the Rockies, allowing 4 runs over 5 innings. The hurler also struggled a bit during spring training, posting a 5.40 ERA over 6 starts. Dave Roberts is hoping things look better being out of Arizona which doesn't lend itself to ideal conditions for pitchers.

“In Arizona, it’s cold, dry air, and altitude. Get to sea level and the ball does a little bit more as far as spin. Michael can really spin the baseball. I do think that slider and curveball will play up.”

Grove is expected to get "a few starts" while Gonsolin (and Pepiot) recover from their injuries.
