Pirates catcher Michael McKenry is out for the season with a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee.
McKenry underwent surgery in Los Angeles on Tuesday to repair his meniscus, the Pirates announced Wednesday. The 28-year-old will not be able to put any weight on his left leg for six weeks. Dr. Neal S. ElAttrache and the Pirates doctors decided surgery was the best option for the fourth-year catcher.
He will look to return for Spring Training 2014, the team said. McKenry was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday but should now be expected to go on the 60-day DL to open up a spot on the 40-man roster. The Pirates have his rights through the 2017 season.
