TEAMS: Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Angels
Mariners outfielder, Michael Saunders, is close to finishing his best major league season ever in a spectacular fashion (at least for Mariner fans). Saunders, the starting center fielder until Franklin Gutierrez returned to the everyday lineup in August, and now the starting left fielder, currently has 21 stolen bases and 19 home runs.
On the year Saunders is hitting .249 with 54 RBIs, and 70 runs. He leads the team in stolen bases and runs scored and is tied with first baseman Justin Smoak and third baseman Kyle Seager for the Mariner’s home run lead.
While a 20-20 season is a sign of a solid player, it is a relatively common feat for baseball players. However, a 20-20 player would be one positive sign that the Mariners are developing their young prospects into quality players. Other signs of the Mariners improving youth includes the emergence of Seager as an 80+ RBI infielder, Jesus Montero as a solid defensive catcher, Jason Vargas as a 210+ IP number two starter, and Tom Wilhelmsen as a flame-throwing closer.
If Saunders can muster a home run in the three regular season games remaining (all against the Los Angeles Angels), he will become the first 20-20 player the Mariners have had since
