PLAYERS: Michael Young

Michael Young has long been the poster boy of the analytic crowd when it comes to poking holes in empty superstars. His fielding--or lack thereof--has greatly reduced the value of his offensive benefits over the years to put him on that poster. But all fielding aside, the guy has always been a good offensive player for the Rangers. In his eleven seasons, Baseball-reference.com has him at 35 oWAR (wins above replacement from just an offensive standpoint). His average season equals 199 hits, 90 runs scored and driven in with a .791 OPS. That has to be adjusted for his home ballpark and it still gives him a 104 OPS+ for his career. And he had one of his best seasons offensively a year ago. But this year? Crater city. Michael Young currently has the tenth lowest wOBA of all qualifying batters in baseball. Add that to the times he plays in the field and you come up with the second LEAST valuable player in Major League Baseball behind only Francoeur of the Royals. And for once, Fangraph...

Rangers activate RHP Koji Uehara from DL

ARLINGTON, Texas The Rangers activated right-hander Koji Uehara from the disabled list Sunday and sent right-hander Tanner Scheppers to Round Rock. Uehara missed 65 games with a strained right lat. Uehara, who had a 2.11 ERA before he got hurt, hasn't pitched for the Rangers since June 9. He made two rehab appearances and is hoping pitching over the next month will give him...

Rangers 3B Beltre has second career cycle

Texas Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre has hit for the cycle. Beltre had a one-out single in the seventh inning Friday night to complete his second career cycle. It is the fourth cycle in the majors this season. Beltre started his night against the Minnesota Twins with a triple in the first inning, his first triple in two years. After a double in the second, he homered in the...

Texas offense continues to pummel foes

ARLINGTON, Texas The Texas Rangers may be in an offensive slump. They went scoreless after the third inning Saturday against the Minnesota Twins. Of course, that followed a start to the game in which the Rangers jumped out to a 9-0 lead after three innings on their way to a 9-3 victory over the Twins. Texas has now scored at least eight runs in the last four games, just the sixth...

Beltre completes cycle with single in seventh

ARLINGTON, Texas Texas Rangers' Adrian Beltre is having a very good week. After hitting three home runs in a game Wednesday, Beltre hit for the cycle in Friday's game against the Minnesota Twins. Beltre achieved the cycle with a single to right field in the seventh inning off Twins reliever Kyle Waldrop. It is the second cycle of Beltre's career, and the second time...

No-no bid, cycle highlight Texas win

Matt Harrison took a no-hit bid into the seventh and went eight innings for his career-high 15th victory, and Adrian Beltre hit for the cycle for the Texas Rangers on Friday night in an 8-0 win over the Minnesota Twins. Harrison (15-7) didn't allow a hit until Trevor Plouffe lined a solid single to left with two outs in the seventh. That came right after left fielder David Murphy...

Adrian Beltre has three-homer game, cycle in same week

It wasn’t but two weeks ago that Adrian Beltre was mired in a slump at the plate. Fast forward to this week where he is currently hitting over .500, and you’ll find that his production has changed drastically. Beltre delivered the second three-homer game of his career on Wednesday in his first three at-bats, and followed that performance by hitting for the cycle for the second...

Hamilton doesn't think Twins threw at his head

Texas Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton could feel the ball whizzing by the back of his neck. Hamilton says, though, that he doesn't think that Minnesota starter Scott Diamond was trying to hit him in the head. Diamond was immediately ejected Thursday night after the lefty's pitch near Hamilton's head in the third inning. Twins catcher Joe Mauer had been hit by a pitch...

Twins send De Vries to mound to end trip

Texas Rangers starter Scott Feldman hasn't received much support lately. That's somewhat hard to believe considering how the two-time reigning AL champions have been hitting the ball. Feldman will try to avoid a fourth consecutive losing start Sunday when Texas goes for a fifth straight victory overall and its first four-game home sweep of the Minnesota Twins in 25 years...

Harrison, Beltre shine in win over Twins

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Matt Harrison took a no-hit bid into the seventh and went eight innings for his career-high 15th victory and Adrian Beltre hit for the cycle for the Texas Rangers in an 8-0 win over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night. Feldman fails to complete Twins sweep

I was pleasantly surprised on Saturday when Ryan Dempster broke his good game-bad game pattern yesterday with a decent outing that ended up being a win.  All we needed was another decent start from Scott Feldman for a four-game sweep of the Twins. So close and yet so far. Six runs on ten hits in 5.2 innings is not a decent start, Feldman.  Not at all.   Sure, only five of those...

Uggh….Like an Uninvited Guest, Roger Clemens is Back.

Roger Clemens had a storied career. Now, he’s like a cold sore. When he keeps coming back, it’s awfully embarrassing. The 50-year-old former All-Star signed with the Sugar Land (Texas) Skeeters of the independent Atlantic League on Monday. He is expected to start for the minor league team on Saturday at home against Bridgeport. “His fastball was clocked at 87 mph; all of his...
