The Guru Contributing Writer As the trade rumors continue to swirl, a name that keeps popping up is Will Middlebrooks. The Chicago White Sox are said to be interested in the third baseman in a possible deal for starting pitcher Jake Peavy. With Jose Iglesias filling in capably at third and uber-prospect Xander Bogaerts waiting in the wings are the Red Sox ready to part ways with Will? Obviously the Red Sox are disappointed with Middlebrooks. Boston expected a lot more than they got from a player they thought would produce in the number five slot. Middlebrooks was sent to Pawtucket after hitting .192 with 60 strikeouts in 53 games this year. Since being demoted, Middlebrooks has been up and down. He's currently hitting a solid .310 for the PawSox, but Red Sox management do not seem impressed. Manager John Farrell said, "Can't say that it's too different than what we saw here. He's had some games where he's swung the bat very well. There's been some g...

Source: Boston Red Sox expected to sign Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez (UPDATED: Phillies sign Cuban star)

It was eleven years ago that the Boston Red Sox desired Cuban star Jose Contreras, but lost out on him at the last minute to the rival Yankees. Just another example of them getting shafted by the Yankees. This loss led Team President Larry Lucchino to throw a chair across the room and coin the “Evil Empire” term for the Yanks. It appears that won’t be the case this time around...

All Hail The Dempster

Exactly when did Ryan Dempster become the most reliable starting pitcher the Red Sox have? The dude held the Orioles at bay for five-and-a-third and the bullpen did the rest. Dempster has now given up three runs or less in ten of his last eleven starts dating back to May. Color me surprised. Meanwhile, someone wearing Stephen Drew’s uniform hit two home runs to power the struggling...

Jose Contreras Impressing in Pawtucket, Could Be Bullpen Option for Red Sox (Video)

Jose Contreras‘ first two outings in the Red Sox system could not have gone much better. The 41-year-old, who boasts a potentially devastating forkball, did not allow a hit or a run in either appearance for Triple-A Pawtucket, striking out seven and walking three over 3 2/3 innings. Minor league production by no means guarantees success in the majors — Contreras himself put up...

Red Sox rumors: Jake Peavy for Will Middlebrooks deal has been discussed

With Clay Buchholz's injury keeping him out for longer than expected, the Boston Red Sox are looking for reinforcements.  They want to maintain their hold on first place, and they are willing to make trades to do so.  One such trade that has been discussed is a deal that would send Will Middlebrooks to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for Jake Peavy. Scott Merkin of...

Video: Big Papi Ejected; Beats Crap Out of Dugout Phone

Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz was thrown out of Saturday night's game after arguing balls and strikes. And then he beat the crap out of the dugout phone. Your browser does not support iframes. Follow Ian on Twitter @soxanddawgs. And be sure to like us on Facebook as well.

Jose Iglesias’ Rough Patch Creates More Questions About Infielder’s True Offensive Potential

We all knew that Jose Iglesias would come back down to earth at some point. We just didn’t know how rough the landing would be. Iglesias entered July hitting .409 (54-for-132) after a stellar June earned him American League Rookie of the Month honors. As expected, Iglesias has cooled off, but the drop-off has been so drastic that we’re left wondering what exactly the Red Sox...

David Ross’ Leadership, ‘Calming Influence’ Should Help Red Sox As Veteran Returns to Clubhouse

David Ross won’t find his name penciled into the Red Sox’ lineup until at least mid August. But the veteran catcher is back with his teammates, and his presence alone could make a difference. Ross hasn’t played since June 14, as he’s currently on the 60-day disabled list because of a concussion. And even when he has been on the field this season, the 36-year-old has endured...

Jose Contreras, Brandon Lyon Could Become Bullpen Options for Red Sox If Nothing Materializes on Trade Market

The Red Sox made a pair of, “Hey, why not?” moves last week. We might soon get a better glimpse of whether or not they’ll actually pay off. The Red Sox signed veteran relievers Jose Contreras and Brandon Lyon to minor league contracts, with the hope being that each has a little something to offer at a reasonable cost. Obviously, the signings didn’t send shock waves throughout...

Red Sox Re-Shuffle Rotation After Rainout

(AP Photo/Michael Dwyer)Thursday's washout at Fenway offered Boston the opportunity to tweak its starting rotation for the next five days. John Lackey—who was last night's scheduled starter—will go tonight in Baltimore. He will be followed by Ryan Dempster on Saturday and Jon Lester on Sunday. Monday's make-up game with the Rays back in Fenway will be handled by Felix...

Boston's Andrew Bailey undergoes season-ending surgery

Do you believe in bad luck? Well if you're a surviving member of the Boston Red Sox bullpen, you may have a reason to start bringing a lucky charm to the park. Just months after losing closer Joel Hanrahan and set-up man Andrew Miller to season-ending surgery, replacement closer Andrew Bailey joined the ranks of Boston relievers to go under the knife, effectively putting an end...

Video: David Ortiz destroys dugout phone after ejection

Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz destroyed the dugout phone on Saturday night when he returned to the dugout after he had thought he earned his third walk of the evening with a 7-2 lead on the Baltimore Orioles in the seventh inning. The home plate umpire ruled the 3-0 pitch a ball even though Ortiz was headed towards first base. Ortiz eventually struck out and had words with the home...

Deal or no deal: Jacoby Ellsbury

Photo Courtesy of CSNNE Conor Frederick Contributing Writer Be prepared, Red Sox Nation. Jacoby Ellsbury probably won't be in a Red Sox uniform next season. His agent is Scott Boras, who will most likely get the best offer he can. John Henry told CSNNE that he isn't confident about getting an extension for Ellsbury like management was able to do for Dustin Pedroia, at...

Almost 9 Years Later, Red Sox Couldn’t be Happier A-Rod Deal Fell Through

It was December 2003, and the Red Sox had just lost the ALCS to the hated Yankees a couple months prior, but everything seemed to be going the Red Sox way. They had just traded for the best Shortstop in all of baseball, and once he worked out a restructured deal, he would come to Boston and a number 3 jersey with the name Rodriguez would be handed to him at a press conference. All...
