Known during his time with the Minnesota Twins for his hard-to-spell last name, his trademark bubble gum bubbles and his defense at first base, Doug Mientkiewicz will now be known as a baseball manager.
The 38-year-old Mientkiewicz was named Monday as the manager of the Fort Myers Miracle, the Twins High-A affiliate, for the 2013 season.
"I'm excited to join the Minnesota organization and Fort Myers Miracle coaching staff," Mientkiewicz said in a statement, "I've always considered myself a Twin."
Mientkiewicz spent the majority of his pro career in Minnesota, playing seven seasons with the Twins from 1998-2004. He then bounced around the league and spent one year each with the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Kansas City Royals, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Dodgers before retiring in 2009. Mientkiewicz was a career .271 hitter and won a Rawlings Gold Glove in 2001 as Minnesotas first baseman.
